  • 2014 Green Bay Packers 7 round Mock Draft 3.0

With the draft coming in 11 days I decided to make one final Mock Draft.

With my last mock draft being a little optimistic I spent a little more time on this one making sure it was more realistic. Enjoy and hopefully these next 11 days will fly by!

1st Rd. 21st pick OLB Ryan Shazier (Ohio St)

Instant starter at ILB, tremendous combination of speed, tackling and coverage skills to become a playmaker for us.

Latest on LB Ryan Shazier including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

    Strengths
Highly productive, disruptive play maker vs. the run and pass. Shoots gaps and plays behind the line of scrimmage (compiled 39.5 TFL the last two seasons). Agile to slip blocks. Quick, strong hands to shed. Knifes gaps and flows very well laterally. Striking tackler -- uncoils on contact. Excellent speed and range -- opens up his stride in space and really covers ground. Bends naturally. Changes direction and accelerates with ease. Explosive first step as a pass rusher -- shows the ability to dip, bend and run the arc low to the ground. Ample athleticism and flexibility to mark backs and tight ends. Led all players at the combine with a 42-inch vertical jump and blazed a sub-4.4 40 time at his pro day. Four-down utility. Arrow is pointing up.

2nd Rd. 53rd pick SS Deone Bucannon (Washington State)

Possible starter at S, Good-sized, athletic, physical safety who has some similarities to Tampa Bay FS Dashon Goldson.

Latest on OLB Deone Bucannon including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

    Strengths
Good length and overall size. Reads run and drops downhill quickly. Has an old-school mentality -- likes contact and is a physical tackler (seeks to punish the ball carrier). Shows pop on contact. Covers kicks and has an ideal mentality for special teams. Productive four-year starter.

3rd Rd. 85th pick DT DaQuan Jones (Penn St)

Future NT, big, strong-bodied interior force who will replaces Pickett.

Latest on DE DaQuan Jones including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

    Strengths
Big body -- looks the part. Fires off the snap and engages quickly. Is difficult to displace and has a strong upper body. Able to control blocks and locate the ball. Plays with a load in his hands -- presses blockers, extends and discards. Generates a strong bull rush and collapses the pocket. Is athletic and redirects well for a big man. Flashes disruptive ability and dominates at times, creating production for teammates. Scheme versatile. Has upside.

3rd Rd 98rd pick FS Brock Vereen (Minnesota)

Possible starter at S. Intelligent, athletic, rangy free safety with desirable strength and cover skills to go along with football bloodlines. This pick allows us to keep Hyde at CB (which is his best position) and adds competition to the safety position.

Latest on FS Brock Vereen including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

    Strengths
Very good athlete with fluid movement skills and good range. Competes hard. Runs the alley and can negotiate traffic. Good zone awareness and route recognition. Understands angles and leverage. Can carry receivers in man coverage with little wasted movement in transition on speed turns. Good leaping ability. Very smart, motivated, team player with a passion for the game. Can line up the defense. Outstanding work ethic. Contributes as a gunner on special teams. Has NFL pedigree. His 25 bench-press reps were most among DBs at the combine, and his 4.07-second short shuttle was second among safeties

4th Rd. 121th pick WR Devin Street (Pittsburgh)

Pitt's all-time leading pass catcher, Street is a narrowly built, long-levered, smooth-muscled receiver whose best assets are his length and hands. Should step right in as the #4 WR and could be a future #2.

Latest on WR Devin Street including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

Strengths Has excellent length and room for added bulk. Chews up ground with long strides. Is a big target underneath with a sizable catch radius. Shows natural receiving skills to track, concentrate and adjust. Soft, dependable hands to extend and pull in a throw off his body. Uses his big frame to post up defensive backs. Nice field awareness. Lined up outside and inside. Solid personal and football character. Productive, 40-game starter. Team captain.

5th Rd. 161th pick OLB Trevor Reilly (Utah)

Toughness desired to set the edge and the motor, intensity and competitiveness to produce effort sacks. Could contribute readily as a situational rusher. Will be a 26 year old rookie, married with 2 daughters.

Latest on LB Trevor Reilly including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

Strengths Very solidly built frame. Good functional playing strength to beat blocks and defend the run. Very solidly built frame. Good functional playing strength to beat blocks and defend the run. Locates the ball quickly and is around it a lot. Crashes the line hard and plays with energy. Flashes shock in his punch. Fine arm-under move to come underneath blockers and work the edges. Can control and disrupt tight ends. Takes good angles. Solid tackler. Ultra-tough, mentally and physically (played through ACL injury as a junior). Extremely competitive. Very good football intelligence -- can line up a defense. Versatile -- has played every LB position and can interchange with ease. Respected tone-setter. Outstanding work ethic. Identifies with the game. Ultra-competitive.

5th Rd. 176th pick TE Marcel Jensen (Fresno State)

Athletic, long-armed, former basketball player who was recruited to play DE. Hes Raw but arrow is pointing up. Will be a 24-year-old rookie.

Latest on TE Marcel Jensen including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

Strengths Passes the eyeball test with outstanding size, including vines for arms. Big target. Smooth off the line for his size. Surprising speed to stretch the field. Can use physicality and his frame to outmuscle smaller DBs. Can adjust to throws and has good hands. Turns upfield with a head of steam. Gets after it in the run game -- engages with leverage and works to position, sustain and finish. Lines up in-line and flexed. Smart and coachable. Arrow pointing up. Has a 35-inch vertical jump.

6th Rd. 197th pick OG Anthony Steen (Alabama)

An efficient zone blocker, Steen understands angles and leverage. He could be ideally suited for a zone-based ground game such as the Eagles, Seahawks or Packers.

Latest on G Anthony Steen including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

Strengths Reliable pass protector. A 500-pound bench-presser and it shows -- jars defenders with his punch. Efficient run blocker. Is quick to set and gain positioning. Works up to the second level quickly and is agile enough to wall off and seal linebackers and safeties. Dominated LSU's Anthony Johnson. Hardworking and coachable. Tough competitor. Very durable.

7th Rd. 236 pick WR Brelan Chancellor (North Texas)

A creative return man and crafty slot receiver with production that far exceeds his measurables, Chancellor has overcome the odds throughout his career and could carve a niche returning punts and beating zones from the slot.

Latest on player.Position player.DisplayName including news, stats, videos, highlights and more on NFL.com

Strengths Has big hands. Very good balance and body control. Runs strong with good body lean. Compact and controlled. Can contort his body in the air and make difficult catches. Has a 41-inch vertical jump. Outstanding agility, burst and short-area quickness. Slippery in the open field -- has a knack for avoiding direct contact and spinning off tacklers. Knows how to set up blocks. Tough and highly competitive. Good vision, awareness and traffic burst in the return game. Very good overall production.

      not bad

i could live with that draft, although if we do go the shazier route, i hope we try to trade down 5 or 6 spots before taking him

Drafting Shazier is tantamount to naming him the Kaepernick stopper; publicly anyway.

I would hope anyone in that spot has some interview and people skills to deflect that attention and stay on much more mundane points.

Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

I've heard the only thing he ever talks about is pad level.

Thanks for the work you put into all your mock drafts Brandon... and everybody that does them really... I was once sold on the Shazier pick if and only if Pryor and Dix weren't available... Now I think I want Shazier in the 1st no matter what... major upgrade at position of need, and not just need but brings the one thing to the defense that we lack going against this 'NEW' QB era and the developing TE position as well (fast LB play to cover speedy QB and drop into coverage for TE)... He helps/upgrades in both areas... I also love the double Safety pick... can't have enough competition in the secondary and both those guys are 6 ft or better... Street the WR looks like AR target material... he's got a look about him and I think Aaron could make him into a player... like the D. Jones from Penn St. pick too... can't have enough D. Jones's on the roster... and my favorite is your 7th rounder... the WR from Univ. North Texas... I graduated from UNT like 10 years ago... and the guy looks like a poor mans Randall Cobb without maybe the QB skills... the rest of your draft looks great to me... depth guys and the project athletic TE and I'm ready to bitch slap some seachick come Sept. 4
Now what y'all know about dem Texas boys

One question about Shazier. He weighed in at 235 at the Combine, but before that his playing weight was listed at 222. Can he keep the weight up during the season? If not, can he play effectively at 222?

Nice job on the mock draft.
Shazier looks fast and Bucannon looks a little raw but might actually have the tools to play pro pass coverage.

He played at 228 last season and showed up 237 at the combine. Luke Kuechly was just 5 pounds more at his combine. I don't think he'll have a problem keeping the weight on, I was more impressed he was able to keep his speed with the added weight.

There is a chance he might not even fall to us.

Yup, Randall Cobb is exactly who came to mind when I watched his highlight film. This kid could be a gem IMO.

More love for Blackhawk. He's so solid, TT might just have to take him. Will Chicago snatch him from our grasp??

Get thee to the draft room, Brandon! I'd totally sign up for this draft. One guy that I was kinda hoping for in the actual draft, someone that would be a complete nightmare for opponents is DeAnthony Thomas. Have some: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ_eIM9EV0I Wow!

agree in concept...but we may have to take him there to get him

                            GREAT JOB ON THE DRAFT

Truth be told....when I did mine a week ago I kept flipping back and forth between Buchanon and Brooks as our round 2 safety pick. I actually had Buchanon in there with a summation...and then I flipped my pick. I'd be happy with either and Shazier and one of the two safeties would give Dom some chips to work with

For the record...though......I like your first draft way better if we could have the first group of guys. My guess is as time passed you maybe realized some of those guys were going higher than you projected where they were picked.
