totally other subject, but were the Pintos that much of a death trap in comparison to other cars of the day? I remember reading something about Nader turning a molehill in to a mountain.

It was hyped up quite a bit at the time. Not sure if it was Nader or just running with a story for ratings. I do vaguely recall that there were some tests done later that showed it was not any where near the problem it was hyped up to be. It did make for a good scene in Top Secret.

Sure, ol' Sonny is an ex-jock, but he did try to provide some support for Criqui and kept his comments down a little bit. Not as much critique and judging as today - just a presentation of the game, with some straightforward commentary ("The Viking offensive line has had some problems this year").

The camera work is a lot sketchier than I'd remembered. That's one area that is much better today.

Ah, ol' Chuck Foreman, and Ron Yary. Soem old-school names. Who was that Vikings RB, I think, who wore glasses and had a couple really good seasons? Chuck Muncie? Didn't he play for them at some point?
Yea, Chuck Muncie played for them for a year or two. He couldn't kick a coke habit.

The presentation of the game was so simple back then too. No fist down superimposed, not even a clock in the corner.

ya, it was hyped up a bit, but still dangerous. Worse was that they seemed to be made from pre-rusted metal

Also had a Pinto. No explosions. However, if your Mother had rolled all the windows up in the car and you and a sibling were screwing around forgetting to close the garage door and couldn't hear her repeated exhortations to close the door so we could get going, then you might try to bang on the windshield to get the attention of two very distracted kids.

You would then find out the windshield wasn't as great a protective barrier as you thought when Mother punches a crack into the glass. Either that, or Mother was exposed to Gamma Rays during atmospheric nuclear tests.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

To be fair, they were hardly unique in the second matter!

No damn reason for that car to rust where it did!

The late 70s were fucking GOLDEN! Maybe not for the Packers....but I was having the time of my life. I would never have been caught dead driving a Pinto....not when I owned a 65 Galaxy 500.

Gotta admit they were Golden, although I didn't get my license that year despite the fact I could.....was too worried about my garage band and beers and a couple of other things I won't mention.

Great post, and video. This was one of the first years I started following football as a kid. I lived in Iowa, and games were regionally televised much like they still are, but in Iowa where there is no predominant team, we always saw the dominant team of Central division at the time...the Vikings. The only time I got to see Packer games on TV back then were if they were playing the Vikings or the Bears. In the 80's and early 90's that regional coverage in Iowa predominantly switched to the Bears, given the build up to the '85 season and they were good for a few years after that. When Ron, Mike and Brett showed up, I saw a lot more Packer games on regional game of the week.

On Sundays in the early 80's, my brother and I would tune the car radio to a very static-filled WTMJ broadcast of Jim and Max, carried by an affiliate station in Platteville, WI I believe, which was about 80 miles from where we lived in Iowa. The broadcasts would go in and out frequently, but we were listening to our beloved Packers, and playing catch in the yard. I'm surprised we didn't ever drain the battery in our old station wagon.

As for the broadcast of this game, and the Packers that year, the '78 season was like an oasis in the desert for Packer fans. Then 1979 came and things were back to normal. Check out the stats from the games during the particular week this game was broadcast, and look at some of the great names:

                                Sounds like the "X" Factor.

I'm glad your not a TV script writer.
