Official Gameday Thread 8-16-14, against some other team in a game that doesn't matter
That #97 was Eugene Jones. A four year veteran with five career sacks. Drafted in the sixth round of the 2010 draft. Jones is a Texas A&M product. Er... actually that's West Texas A&M (not kidding).
Look, Derrick Sherrod has the lineage and physical gifts to dominate a JAG such as E. Jones. Can he, will he, get it together in time for the regular season? Long shot. If he looked like that against Just A Jag Jones (sorry Bretsky), how will he look against the elite edge rushers that line up week after week when the real bullets fly?
LT is a trust position, especially when the QB is one Aaron Rodgers. Sherrod will never smell the field without gaining some trust in protecting the blind side. Just like pass targets need to earn trust by running correct routes and making proper reads, just like a RB needs to have trust that they can pass protect, LT needs that basic trust as well.
The NFL is a ruthless business.
Go back and look at #16 get buried on that first sack. Then envision it's the regular season and it's #12 taking that hit. Can't have it. No "on the job training" allowed when the real games start.
No one wants to see that hit, but its not like there are starting caliber left tackles just waiting for phone calls out there. He's got to fix the mechanical problem he had with 97.
Odd thing was, I expected that kind of glitch last week. Then you fix it this week and progress.
Rams DE's might just be better. We'll see in a week if he steps it up.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

He also needs to fix whatever problems got him cleanly beat at right tackle.
I went back and watched his plays. It was a Newhousian performance: most of the time he did just fine, but then the breakdowns were dramatic. He got toasted 3 1/2 times in less than 3 quarters of play. That's Newhouse on his worst day.
Silverstein says "Sherrod settled down and didn't allow any jail breaks after the first half." Not so, in fact Sherrod at RT got badly toasted by none other than Michael Sam. There is an entire article on the first openly gay sack:
TERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Thank you FLOWER

Bears officially have signed WR Santonio Holmes to a one-year contract and terminated contract of WR Eric Weems.
If you are a longtime Bear fan, are you relieved at how serious the team now takes offense or do you think they have lost their minds if they think the Defense is good enough to win?
Bears seem to be in the same struggle GB is in but IMO Green Bay is a solid notch above them
The Bears Offense is going to be stellar; they need their defense to be in the top fifteen to twenty range
Sound familiar ???

Linsley looked OK. Not sure if there is a backup Guard on the roster even though Taylor has gotten some praise in camp.
The second line blocked the run OK against the #2 defense. It looks better than last year.
I have read a lot about Linsley and am completely on board with being drunk the Homer Juice with this guy.

ugh, watching that game was like getting my teeth pulled
i really think this is the year i stop watching NFL games, i enjoyed all 4 of the english soccer games i watched today much more then this game
i saw like a handful of commercials at least 20 times, and all the fucking flags, my god i forgot how boring football is. its getting close to baseball territory now
I am SPEECHLESS

So is Elliott this year's UDFA OLB gem who won't make the team next year?
GREAT QUESTION HERE
I did not see the game yet but in between my parents fiftieth anniversary party and a friends forty B'Day party I listened to Packer Postgame.
Of serious debate was whether Nick Perry should have a spot on this roster
They noted he was brutal last night. One announcer felt his roster spot was guaranteed this yr cause he's our first round pick. The other feared we would cut ties and keep him. Neither thought he has shown enough to make the team

Trying to figure out what game you were watching. The guy had a rough first series. Now, I haven't watched the 4th quarter, but he was pretty good after taht first series. Time will tell. You guys can have the bahk love. I don't see a significant difference between him and Sherrod atm.

I think it's all about attitude with Perry. He has the ability to be an effective player. One would have hoped that the signing of Peppers would have lit a fire under him. However, if just the opposite happened, if he's sulking because he won't be the starter, then you get rid of him. The one thing you don't want to do is keep people who don't want to be here.
