2. SHAQ THOMPSON | Washington 6001|228 lbs|3JR Sacramento, Calif. (Grant HS) 4/21/1994 (age 21) #7
BACKGROUND: A five-star safety recruit out of high school, Shaquille “Shaq” Thompson had Oregon, California and several other teams anxiously waiting his college decision, ultimately deciding to commit to Washington. He started every game at nickelback as a true freshman, recording 74 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, earning All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention and All-Freshman honors. Thompson started 12 games at linebacker in 2013 and finished with 78 tackles and 4.0 tackles for loss, earning All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention honors. He started all 13 games as a junior in 2014, playing both offense (running back) and defense (linebacker), recording 81 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries, earning First Team All-Pac 12 and All-American honors. He also won the 2014 Paul Hornung Award as college football’s most versatile player. Thompson opted to skip his senior season to enter the 2015 NFL Draft. He was also drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 18th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of high school, playing for the organization’s minor league summer team.
STRENGTHS: Above average athleticism with versatile playmaking ability…coordinated footwork and smooth hips in his movements, displaying fluid body control to break down in space…rangy player with speed to mirror at the line of scrimmage…physical wrap tackler with an accurate strike zone to hit and finish with his long arms, closing with veracity…understands field leverage, eliminating inside lanes and forcing the ballcarrier to alter his path…aggressively takes on blocks with active limbs to rip-and-tear…trusts what he sees and plays with above average ball instincts and spatial awareness to shut down zones…versatile in pass coverage with the movement skills and body control to cover down the seam…natural ballskills and timing with 16 passes defended and five interceptions on his rรฉsumรฉ – averaged 30.4 yards per interception return with five career touchdowns on defense…heady turnover machine, always trying to rip the ball out, but not at the expense of the stop…versatile experience offense, defense and special teams – averaged 7.5 yards per carry as a running back in 2014 (61/456/2) and made an impact on special teams coverages, making impact stops as the first man down the field…above average leadership traits with the accountability, mindset and football aptitude that is expected at the next level…durable and didn’t miss any playing time the last three seasons…NFL bloodlines – older brother (Syd’Quan) was a seventh round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft out of California, playing three seasons at cornerback for the Denver Broncos.
WEAKNESSES: Lacks ideal functional power for the position and needs to get stronger…needs to better anticipate blockers to avoid contact and keep himself clean…can be eaten up at the line of scrimmage and second level, lacking ideal hand technique and pop at the point of attack…doesn’t consistently unlock his hips at contact and will wait for the ballcarrier to initiate instead of attacking…will take some wasted steps and has room to improve his discipline and anticipation…finishing power has room for improvement, allowing himself to be stiff-armed at times, causing him to slip off his target…enters the NFL with questions about his fit and might lack a natural position.
SUMMARY: One of the most versatile prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft class, Thompson starred on offense and defense for the Huskies, but made it clear to NFL teams that his next level future will be at linebacker, not safety or running back, because that is where he is most comfortable. He is a balanced, greased-up athlete with the functional range and playmaking instincts to make an impact in pass coverage, run support and on special teams coverages. Thompson is a see-ball, get-ball type of player, but his discipline needs nurtured to eliminate mistakes. He has room to get stronger to improve his take-on skills, but the biggest question with his NFL transition is role – what is his fit at the next level? The answer to that question will vary from team to team, but there is no questioning his athletic and playmaking potential – early-to-mid second round player with the physical and mental make-up NFL teams seek on and off the field.

Texas DT Malcom Brown still on the board. He'd be awfully hard to pass up if he's there at 30.
Oh boy, a UT product. Not a stellar record of success in the last 6 years.Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Panthers will select Shaq Thompson.
4/26: The Panthers have shown great interest in Shaq Thompson. "If Carolina picks Thompson and he wants to play this year, his best option may be at safety because of his size and strength." - Jonathan Jones, Charlotte Observer

Oh boy, a UT product. Not a stellar record of success in the last 6 years. One time Lombardi was disgusted with the team in practice and told them they were going to have to start with the basics. He held up a ball and said: "This is a football." McGee immediately called out, "Stop, coach, you're going too fast," and that gave everyone a laugh.
