  • 6'3" 258 lbs.

    Analysis

    Strengths

    Not the biggest target, but well-*built and plays bigger than listed size when catching in traffic. Shows agility in the seam with an ability to adjust to poorly thrown balls. Quality hands and can secure in traffic. Puts head down and churns out as many yards after catch as he can. Solid, four*-year performer. Weaknesses

    Upright route runner too easily stymied by contact off snap. Gets no separation out of his rounded breaks. Radar is severely lacking as run blocker. Leaner who will miss or slide off of intended target. Doesn't work into proper position to seal and needs to have tackle help in pass protection. Draft Projection

    Undrafted Bottom Line

    Lacks the prototypical measurements teams want from a move tight end and he's simply not an effective enough blocker to be considered as anything more than an H-*back.
    One time Lombardi was disgusted with the team in practice and told them they were going to have to start with the basics. He held up a ball and said: "This is a football." McGee immediately called out, "Stop, coach, you're going too fast," and that gave everyone a laugh.

    • Didn't like the last pick but I give the draft grade a solid B.

      • Got a player at every position of need save the 3-man line. Hopefully that means they like Pennell and/or Boyd...

              Will always carry out blocking assignment on special teams instead of pulling a T.J. Rubley
              FIFY. I hope

                  • I liked the draft through five rounds, but that 6th round was a dud. I'm tired of Thompson drafting a FB. I've never heard of the other two guys. Of course, that means at least one of these guys will have major impact.

                        Hmmm. Two sacks, a TFL and a TD. Not bad for a day's work.

                            • Aw, man. I wish we had selected Hayes Pullard instead of that TE from UAB. Pullard would likely have a better chance of sticking at a position of need, so that's better value to me.

                              • So, the TE wasn't on the list of guys I researched, but his measurables are solid. Comparing him to an athletic, late round sleeper TE that I liked in Wes Saxton, he looks almost identical athletically. A tad short but pretty athletic.

                                Saxton = 6'3" 248, 4.65 40, 4.49 shuttle, 7.29 3 cone, 36" vert, 119" broad, 19 bench
                                Backman = 6'3" 243, 4.66 40, 4.49 shuttle, 7.23 3 cone, 35.5" vert, 117" broad, 17 bench
