The true definition of cap hell: Hellish hole where a team has NO choice but to waive players after players with titanic salaries for rookies and cheaply-paid vets of NFL wars for multiple seasons.

The Cowboys didn't have to cut Dez and Romo. Cowboys opted to cut the two of them b/c the pig owner didn't want them eating away some of his profits.

Furthermore, cap hell certainly ain't being $10 M over the new cap 2 days before the new league year, cutting Wahle and Sharper to get to $7 M below on the new league year, hibernating in a closet the rest of the season, and somehow being at $30 M below at the start of the very next league year.

Don't bother trying to smarten up a chump.

Been years and he's still fooled.

That's how you avoid cap hell.

Cowboys are in deep. Fourth or fifth circle of hell or thereabouts. The only thing saving them right now is cheap rookies on offense.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Ben Agajanian's first game for the Pack as an emergency kicker was November 19 game in GB vs Ben's hometown team, the LA Rams. Hornung was unavailable due to military commitments, back-up kicker Jerry Kramer had a bum ankle. Ben's foot is susceptible to freezing. So he took the field with a funky pair of Red and Grey electric hunting socks. Ben knew most of the Ram coached, so both teams waved the "out of uniform" NFL rule.

I was real impressed with that "Agajanian autograph", personalized, no less.

After this game, The Dallas Texans needed him for a late season game and he kicked for them. Then he kicked for the Pack again vs the Rams and in the NFL Championship game. Hornung kicked the field goals in the NFL champ game Ben just kicked off, but got the winner's check.

Hornung almost didn't get to play in the NFL Championship game. An Army captain at Ft Riley KS "pulled rank" on the Horn and wouldn't issue a weekend pass for the Golden Boy. Horn called Lombardi and filled him in. Vince told Paul to relax. In an hour of so, Paul got the Weekend pass approved. Lombardi had JFK's personal phone number in his pocket. So a junior officer in Kansas got the call of his life from the President and all he got to say was "YESSIR, right away Sir".

Sorry to jack this thread, but U boys are wasting your breath, you'll never explain the cap to Tank and he'll never understand it anyway.
That's pretty good, KY. But some sources disagree with a couple of details. Paul Hornung tells it: "I go back and pack and Kennedy calls Fort Riley and asks to speak to the camp commander, who is not there, so he finally gets the company commander. And he says 'This is President Kennedy and I'm calling on behalf of Paul Hornung' and the guy says, 'Yeah and I'm Donald Duck.' But he got me out. A Major came down and told me I could leave." (From When Pride Still Mattered, p.290).

Great story and I like your version just as much...

          • Well thanks Cleft, that's a compliment coming from a broke, red, ruff and sore sportswriter.

There's another tale from that wacky season which found Lombardi scrambling to field his full team due to military commitments.

The Pack played the 49ers in the second to last game. Once again, they didn't know if Paul could get a weekend pass to play ball. That Saturday, no Hornung. He misses the walk thru, lunch AND dinner. EVerybody is worried, but late that night the rumor spreads that he's with the team. At breakfast, there's the Golden boy, greeting everybody and telling jokes.

After a bit, Paul gets up and makes a short speech, "Boys, I had two goals in coming out to San Francisco. I took care of the first one last night. Now let's take care of the second one & beat the 49ers.

Everybody (including Vince) laughed and the club was right. Nice and loose and they had their star back.

So the team took Paul's pep talk to heart

They went out and played a raggedy and sloppy game and lost 22-21.

            OK, end of thread jack.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread "trying to explain the cap to a chump".

            • Offensive line was 'crown jewel' of Lombardi Packers

              Posted May 18, 2017

              Cliff Christl Packers team historian

Packers Back Up QB QB John Roach: " Lombardi was part preacher, part professor, part wild man. "

              On the Packers’ offensive line:

“The best. That was the crown jewel of our team, the offensive line. Forrest (Gregg) was the best (right) tackle in the game. Jerry Kramer was the best right guard in the game. (Jim) Ringo was the best center. Ron Kramer was one of the best – (Mike) Ditka being the other – tight ends. Fuzzy (Thurston) was a good left guard, but he wasn’t as good as these other guys. (Bob) Skoronski also was a good one. (Norm) Masters was good, but I think Skoronski was better. Bigger. Jerry Kramer, Forrest Gregg and Ringo made all-pro almost every year.”

              On starting quarterback Bart Starr:

“When I got there, I had some good friends on the team. They came out to pick me up at the airport and openly indicated to me that I had an excellent shot at being the starting quarterback. I had had a pretty good year in 1960. We started playing exhibition games and (Starr) played great. I said to one of the people who told me that, ‘Hell, I can’t beat this guy out. This guy is plenty good.’ The guy says, ‘Well, he hasn’t played that way (in the past). This is the first year he’s played like that.’ (Starr) just didn’t make mistakes. He wasn’t a dominating player, but, to me, that was good for the team. The team was so strong they didn’t need a dominating quarterback. They just needed him to float that pass game into the running game. We had such a good running game. And Bart ran that to perfection. When they did need him, he could step up and deliver. But most of the time he just let the offensive line dominate the game.”

On Bart Starr’s work ethic and game preparation:

“He told me or somebody told me he used to watch Johnny Unitas films – for mechanical purposes, to copy him. The way Johnny delivered the ball was kind of the classic way. I think it gave Bart a lot of confidence watching films. He took the game seriously. He deserved his notoriety. He earned his success. He wasn’t just born with ability. He worked at it.”

              On fullback Jim Taylor:

“He was ahead of his time. He lifted weights and trained and was in superb condition. When he broke into the secondary, he’d run right at the safety. He tried to run over him, not evade him. He was a tough, hard-nosed, true fullback.”

On whether Hornung was the key to Lombardi’s early championship teams: “He and Lombardi had a special spark that they gave that team. The team was good. Solid defense. Solid offense. Best line in the business. But that extra spark came from Lombardi mainly, but Hornung, too.”

I'm happy to say I have a signed Paul Hornung Book. These 1960's Green Bay Packers were something I truly came to enjoy. They made me feel the commitment I have to the Green Bay Packers as 'a Fan' and winning Championships.
