Official Day 3 (Rounds 4-7) Draft Thread

Regardless of the reason for the past couple of season’s failures, going into free agency we had ONE CB...King. We didn’t address that need with starter talent. We had to address it during the draft. That meant not being able to address other needs. Our roster is not as good as last year’s roster. We may still pick up a free agent lineman or a free agent wideout, but right now...not as good.

The best punter went early in the 5th round (he was also projected to go in rounds 3-4). It looks like there were two elite punting prospects. Seattle took the first guy 23 picks before us. We took Scott. The guy the Raiders drafted with the pick after us was rated the #4 punter and was projected to go in round 7/UDFA.Originally posted by red View Posti haven't even found a site that had him as the best punter in the draft
besides that. YOU NEVER DRAFT PUNTERS or KICKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"There's a lot of interest in the draft. It's great. But quite frankly, most of the people that are commenting on it don't know anything about what they are talking about."--Ted Thompson

I agree that there were some decent FA DB's available and the only thing we did was take a half-ass shot at stealing Fuller from the Bears. I was hoping they would sign one of the younger somewhat competent CB's that were available instead of settling for re-signing House and picking up an aged Tramon. I'll be curious to see if Tramon can play up to last year's standards again or if it was more of a fluke at this point in his career.Originally posted by beveaux1 View PostRegardless of the reason for the past couple of season’s failures, going into free agency we had ONE CB...King. I hope we don't have to pick another DB in the first 2-3 rounds for the next 5 years because we've invested a shitload of resources in that area over the past few years without much return. Actually I'd say we've invested a lot of resources on the D side of the ball over the past few years without much return.

Jack Cichy goes to Tampa. One time Lombardi was disgusted with the team in practice and told them they were going to have to start with the basics. He held up a ball and said: "This is a football." McGee immediately called out, "Stop, coach, you're going too fast," and that gave everyone a laugh.

yup, pretty spot on. this is why you have to use FA wisely. we needed to focus on CB and pass rush. there wasn't much in free agency for pass rushers (if anything) and there was quite a few cb's that could have helped us. we really needed to get one of those CBs so we could draft a pass rusher.Originally posted by beveaux1 View PostYou don’t get impact players in rounds 4-7. What you get are projects, special teamers , practice squad guys...and kickers. If you didn’t get your starter-types in the first couple of rounds, you’re not getting one. The reason we took two CBs was because we failed in the off-season. Had we picked up one of the 7 or 8 starter quality CBs in free agency, we would have drafted edge rushers, WRs, or OL at the top of the draft. We didn’t use free agency to fill holes like I thought the new guy would.
We used our available money to pick up a 31 year old TE and 2 or 3 scrubs (maybe the DL will be a plus). At this point, I don’t see how this roster is equal to last season’s roster at this time last year. Ok i’m Off my soapbox.
right now, our secondary is patched up, but unless we somehow find a pass rush from nothing, those guys are still gonna be in trouble
