Cobb will be a nice fill-in until the new kids get some experience. Yes, the contract is on the high side, but we get the bonus of a veteran receiver familiar with our system, someone Rodgers trusts, and $13M in cap room next year when we get rid of him.Originally posted by run pMc View PostI don't see how anyone wants to trade for Cobb, not in the last year of a contract like he has. Plus without Cobb, the WR 'depth' might make Rodgers want to renegotiate that new contract. A lot of greenhorn WRs on the 53.

Until he gets hurt early in the season.

Well, here is the source of the confusion over Ahmad Thomas:
Ryan Wood @ByRyanWood
#Packers will not be having ILB Ahmad Thomas back on their practice squad. Thomas is joining the Indianapolis Colts practice squad, a league source said.
Ryan Wood @ByRyanWood
Some more context on Ahmad Thomas' situation. He was in #Packers facility to sign to practice squad, but source says they turned him away. Thomas fortunate he was able to latch on with Colts. Highly unusual to be asked to come in on practice-squad Sunday only to be turned away.
Ryan Wood @ByRyanWood
So, to be clear, Ahmad Thomas was fully intent on staying with the #Packers. It was the team that turned him away, per source, after going through trouble of calling him into their facility. We'll see if that comes back to hurt them. Certainly doesn't help build relationships.Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Ryan Wood @ByRyanWood
#Packers GM Brian Gutekunst says the process "was really lively" this weekend. Never an easy time, he said, but thought process was good.
Gutekunst asked if two first-round picks were too much to give up for Khalil Mack: "I would never talk about the discussions I have with another team." Says there have been a lot of trade discussions in recent past.
Gutekunst said "quality" of WR depth chart was why #Packers kept 8 at that position, and hints that RB depth chart remains work in progress: "That's the thing about our roster right now. Nothing is set in stone. It's fluid."
Gutekunst: "That running back spot is a little bit of an evolving position right now."
Gutekunst says analytics play into how #Packers value fullback position, the fact they aren't on the field for that many snaps, and that TE can handle many of those job responsibilities.
Gutekunst on how James Crawford, a late arrival at camp, earned a spot on 53 at ILB. Says "special teams is really where he made his mark," especially in Kansas City: "He had one of the better special teams games that we've seen around here in a while in that last game."
Gutekunst on how he gauges whether to invest heavily into a star player or pull back: "I think my thought process is always winning. Does this help us win?"
Adds: "We're here to win now."
Gutekunst says his trust in how Mike McCarthy develops QBs was part of the reason he decided to keep Tim Boyle on the #Packers' 53, ensuring he has a chance to develop in McCarthy's system.
Gutekunst asked if it's easier to release a drafted player that Ted Thompson selected rather than his own, says he doesn't see any difference: "All the guys that were here, I've been invested in. I've been here. I've been a part of those drafts."
Gutekunst asked if he prefers 2 or 3 QBs on the 53, says it comes down to quality. Just like WR, he said. It's apparent #Packers new GM wanted to keep the 53 best players regardless of position. Something GMs always say, but this roster allocation seems to bear out that way.
Gutekunst asked if there are any players currently on the 53 headed to IR: "I would like to think all the guys we have right now would play for us at some point this season, but we're working through some things right now."Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Surprised and disappointed by this. I thought he was going to make it over Martini and this Crawford guy (who's he?) since Morrison is basically in the Blake/Jake mold and Thomas would be more like Burks. I assume they will bring Josh Jones in if they need to. And yeah -- calling Thomas in to turn him away is a hell of a thing for a team to do (or one very nasty prank by someone pretending to be on staff).Ryan Wood @ByRyanWood

We'll see. I still think this was McCarthy getting rid of an attitude.
MY TAKE
Randall had a ton of talent that the GB coaching staff was unable to maximize
Sounded like he was a douchebag in GB; sounded like the GB coaches wanted to dump him
We got screwed in that deal.
You don't spend a 1st round draft pick on a backup QB, who really looks like the same guy we just traded away for a 6th round pick.TERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Is Cobb really getting top 10 money ? He might...but it seems like 8-9/yr would not be top money anymore
Is Cobb really a starter ? Apparently on GB; but how many other teams want him as a starter with that wage ? Interesting to debateTERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Thank you FLOWER

Cobb is #22 in average salary among WR's. So while he's overpaid, he's not getting elite money. I'm for keeping him this year. He can help the team win now, and hopefully one of the young guys will develop as the year goes on.Originally posted by Bretsky View PostIs Cobb really getting top 10 money ? the contract he signed 3 years ago still ranks as the 21st highest in the nflOriginally posted by Bretsky View PostIs Cobb really getting top 10 money ? He might...but it seems like 8-9/yr would not be top money anymore

when he got it, in 2015, it was the 11th highest per year for WR's, one spot ahead of our clear cut #1 and a guy who actually produced (jordy), who signed his new contract just the season before
going off just this season, his cap number of 12.1 million is the 8th highest in the nfl among WRs

What year are we debating about here? 2015 or 2018?Originally posted by red View Postso top 10 money at a position is just "starter money"

Was Matt Stanford the best QB in football when he signed his deal or a FA at the right time?
The list of top paid isn’t perfect. But for this year Cobb is in the teens for his contract deal.Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

also to keep in mind, back then, we didn't want to pay our clear cut "elite" #1 that kind of money. jennings left for minny and got 9 million a year.
i think a year later, jordy got 9.75 a year (and performed like a #1, and a year after that cobb got 10 million a year ( and imo, never came close to earning that kind of money)

Sounds like poor Ahmad Thomas was in a scene from a goddamn Charles Dickens novel - the hungry fledgling innocent turned away at the door by the foul-smelling rum-breathing oily-skinned Russ Ball. Or was it the sweaty, rutty Mike McCarthy?"The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."
