How long are your arms? How
Many do you have? One, two, or more? Which animals have the strangest arms? Which animals have the longest arms (Elephant trunks don’t count!)? What is the size of your head?

          Tex, you're really . . . reaching here.

I hope you've got longer arms than Dean Lowry.

I didn't have any particular agenda in asking - just that maybe the short arms thing is overrated. I seem to recall Lowry knocking down a few passes.

At my age, I only get about two inches off the ground playing tennis - as a white man, I never could jump much. But I've still got the reach to get up and snag some volleys at the net.

I think some players have more of a knack for it than others; longer arms certainly helps with fighting off blocks but there are so many other things that go into a pass rush. Given his height, I think the shorter arms is less of a hindrance than if he was 6'2".

A few years back the Packers had a runt of a DT for a couple years who routinely knocked down passes. I've forgotten his name, but he had a bunch each year for the three or so years he was around. He had a knack for stepping into the throwing lane, pushing off from the lineman's block and getting his hands up at just the right time. They aren't that far from the QB, how much elevation can the ball gain after leaving the QB's hand? Timing and instinct more than height and arm length, I think.

Didn't Johnny Jolly used to excel at this? Not a runt though.

I associate this with either playing a read then react technique or being poor at pass rush. Or double teamed. Gives you time to look up and find the QB and the ball.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Jolly was good at it, but the guy I am thinking of was before Jolly (I think), so more years ago than I care to remember!

In the 2000s, the first guy I thought of was Steve Warren. Played two years. Maybe Russell Maryland, but he only played one for the Packers and figured you'd have remembered him.

Into the 90's I thinking Jurko; There were other guys who knocked down passes, but were all over 6'4" Maybe Robert Brown?

I think it might have been Steve Warren I was thinking of, and maybe more preseason performances than regular season. I just remember a shortish DT who didn't do a whole lot, but seemed to get his hand on passes.
