At this point I think its undeniable that he will have a nice career as a specialist. Can he become a dominant 3 down player is the only question left.

What specialty? He's an edge setter and has great pass rush potential. He's a hard worker, so I could see a Big Z career arc. With his athleticism, it may even come sooner for him than it did for Big Z.

bobble has talked about this before. Gary seems better when he's asked to do one thing and struggles when it could be run or pass. He's kind of a two part specialist. Either an edge setter (can't cover, doesn't key fast enough to switch to pass rush mid play) or a pass rusher in obvious passing downs.

He's an elite athlete developing elite technique with a slow reaction to misdirection or deception.

He could have a 3 down packer HOF career, but you're gonna want some more complete and smart players around him so Gary can stick to.the simpler tasks. There are ways to scheme Gary to his strengths. bobble might be overlooking the ways you'd scheme him for success. But I see what he's saying that Gary doesn't seem to have that all time great quality of being football smart on top of the physical and technique skillset.

I agree. Although Gary isn't getting as many snaps as Z, he's actually playing as much or more at OLB as Z is. And he's playing more in his 2nd year than Z did in his 2nd year at Baltimore. Actually Z has always been the guy who was more of a specialist, as a pass rusher. It wasn't until he came to the Packers that he became a full time starter.

1st and 10 against a run or pass team. Ask Gary to close.the pocket. That works in run or pass.
1st and 10 against mobile QB. Same task. Works

You can have other guys take calculated pass rush risks on early downs when they key in on it. Collapsing the pocket is kind of a universal defensive skillset. It works for everything. He just doesn't have to be all that smart on any of the downs when he's as good as he is at one very needed skill. On top of that, he's looking like a hell of a pass rusher in obvious passing situations. You can use Gary on every down. Just not the way bobble has that Pidgeon holed. But I understand the concept hes trying to express. Gary isn't good at everything. That's for sure.

Gary will be a top 5 OLB

You heard it here first - Preston Smith is a cap casualty after the season so they can retain Bak.

It's possible. They would eat 8 million and save 8 million.

Meaning they wouldn't gain any cap space by cutting him? If so, why would they do that?

No. If they keep him, his cap hit would be 16 million. If they cut him, the remaining 8 million from his signing bonus would count against he cap.

They ate $ to get rid of Perry. I have zero doubt they would do it with P. Smith if he doesn’t play up to contract and Gary improves that much.

                            Lindsey saves 8

Bakh already makes 12. If the average goes up to 20 you just have to part with Lindsley.

                            Bakh 20 per year
                            Jenkins
                            Patrick small contract
                            Turner 8 per year
                            Wagner 5 per

The line is fine without Lindsley.

I like Preston. Would hate to see him go cuz the deep 280 pound OLB group takes pressure off the shallow DL rotation.

Bakhs cap hit is 15M. He turns 29 at the end of this month.

If he got 22M per for 3 years extension. 66 for three years plus the 15 for this year. That's 4 years, 82M and would take him to age 33. 20.5 per year.

Or just let him go and keep everyone else.
