At this point I think its undeniable that he will have a nice career as a specialist. Can he become a dominant 3 down player is the only question left.

What specialty? He's an edge setter and has great pass rush potential. He's a hard worker, so I could see a Big Z career arc. With his athleticism, it may even come sooner for him than it did for Big Z.Originally posted by bobblehead View PostAt this point I think its undeniable that he will have a nice career as a specialist. bobble has talked about this before. Gary seems better when he's asked to do one thing and struggles when it could be run or pass. He's kind of a two part specialist. Either an edge setter (can't cover, doesn't key fast enough to switch to pass rush mid play) or a pass rusher in obvious passing downs.Originally posted by HarveyWallbangers View PostWhat specialty? He's an elite athlete developing elite technique with a slow reaction to misdirection or deception.
He could have a 3 down packer HOF career, but you're gonna want some more complete and smart players around him so Gary can stick to.the simpler tasks. There are ways to scheme Gary to his strengths. bobble might be overlooking the ways you'd scheme him for success. But I see what he's saying that Gary doesn't seem to have that all time great quality of being football smart on top of the physical and technique skillset.Formerly known as JustinHarrell.

I agree. Although Gary isn't getting as many snaps as Z, he's actually playing as much or more at OLB as Z is. And he's playing more in his 2nd year than Z did in his 2nd year at Baltimore. Actually Z has always been the guy who was more of a specialist, as a pass rusher. It wasn't until he came to the Packers that he became a full time starter.Originally posted by HarveyWallbangers View PostWhat specialty? He's an edge setter and has great pass rush potential. 1st and 10 against a run or pass team. Ask Gary to close.the pocket. That works in run or pass.
1st and 10 against mobile QB. Same task. Works
You can have other guys take calculated pass rush risks on early downs when they key in on it. Collapsing the pocket is kind of a universal defensive skillset. It works for everything. He just doesn't have to be all that smart on any of the downs when he's as good as he is at one very needed skill. On top of that, he's looking like a hell of a pass rusher in obvious passing situations. You can use Gary on every down. Just not the way bobble has that Pidgeon holed. But I understand the concept hes trying to express. Gary isn't good at everything. That's for sure.Formerly known as JustinHarrell.

Gary will be a top 5 OLBSwede: My expertise in this area is extensive. The essential difference between a "battleship" and an "aircraft carrier" is that an aircraft carrier requires five direct hits to sink, but it takes only four direct hits to sink a battleship.

Meaning they wouldn't gain any cap space by cutting him? If so, why would they do that?Originally posted by Joemailman View PostIt's possible. No. If they keep him, his cap hit would be 16 million. If they cut him, the remaining 8 million from his signing bonus would count against he cap.Originally posted by HarveyWallbangers View PostMeaning they wouldn't gain any cap space by cutting him?
