I have to think so. Not only in terms of running the offense full-time, but also because it sounds like he's a project in need to lots of work with Tom Clements. Give the guy another week at least to figure out where the stadium is and whether he can find a place to rent a couch in Green Bay. Play Clifford and run that check-down offense and see if you can squeak by Indy.

The only take away from this clusterfuck of a game is that this league is bullshit. Or at least the decision makers are. People is Brazil don’t give a fuck about the American football, but here’s two of the leagues top two teams slipping and slopping all over a gay soccer field until the top payed QB busts his fucking leg up. Was it worth it? And who the fuck negotiates NFL TV contracts? I don’t know man. He has shown something before but looked like shit this year. Maybe this gives him a spark. He has a shitload of receivers and knows the playbook. It probably won’t be decided until Saturday night but I’m siding with Clifford starting.

I am thinking, as we all are, that we'll see if the rest of this team has the talent and character to keep the Packers afloat for the next however-many games, until Love gets back.

I'm reminded of a season about ten years ago - I can't remember which season, maybe 2013 - in which, at a certain point, Bob McGinn (many of you remember him), who was a Packers' beat writer at the time, wrote an article announcing that the Packers finally, finally had enough talent to stay afloat IF something were to happen to Aaron Rodgers. He wrote that the defense looked like it could carry the team, and the running game looked strong enough to move the offense.

Then, of course, Aaron Rodgers DID get hurt. The very next week, I think. And, of course, the Packers proceeded to make Bob McGinn look like a starry-eyed fool, as they got run over and run over for a game or two before steadying the ship a little. But they certainly did NOT look like a team that could compete without Aaron Rodgers.

Yeah, it's not a happy memory.

But it's a good moment to remember as we kool-aid drinkers start talking about how much more this team is talented, overall, than they used to be with Rodgers.

When announcers say things like "You know, this team always has a chance as long as (take your pick) Brett Favre / Aaron Rodgers is quarterbacking," everyone knows that what they're really saying is "Well, the Packers' overall talent level is really mediocre, but since they have a great QB they have a chance."

That's my concern now - that we got excited about the overall talent of this team, and are about to find out it's the Emperor's New Clothes all over again.

I don't expect much from the offense this week - the offensive line was pretty awful last week. Plus, and I don't know if anyone else saw this, Jacobs looks like a solid back, for sure, but not even close to the dynamic play of Aaron Jones. Even once Jacobs got going in the second half, I just saw a guy who is a good back, above average, but not in Jones's league.

So now it's on the defense - again. With yet another new coordinator, with the usual array of first-round picks littering the field, with a top free-agent signee, with all the resources spent on it that an NFL team could be expected to spend.

And I'm not inspired by the 34 points the Iggles dropped on this team. You know, the Iggles offense with the brand new offensive coordinator? During the first game of the season, when defenses are traditionally ahead of offenses?

The knock on Willis is inability to work through reads or make presnap reads (the knock on most young QBs that got by on athleticism in college and didn't play at top schools). The best way to play it is run, run, run, run and play action rollout. 2 reads max and then take off running if they are both covered. Preferably deep reads so you punish safeties sneaking up in run support.

I assumed a check down offense meant not throwing anything unless it's really safe, resulting in a lot of defaulting to the check down option. Reading the defense isn't as important if that's the case.

I also agree with your premise that they can scheme to challenge the defense while limiting the complexity for the QB.

Yup - the Jayden Daniels LSU offense - 2 reads and run. Willis can probably do that.
The OL has to play better, the D does too. Until he proves otherwise, Willis gives them a better chance than Clifford. Clifford did not look good in preseason.

Willis has a strong arm and can throw a pretty deep ball over the top to Watson if the safeties creep up to stop the run. You can guarantee MLF is going to scheme some deep shots. Question is whether Willis can be poised and accurate enough. MLF needs to come up with a game plan specific to his talents and relative newness to the team/playbook.

13 out of 32 made it through the season healthy last year. 10 started all 17 games and 3 sat out the last week because their playoff spot was locked up. (Purdy, Mahomes, Jackson)
