Some news and notes from Day 1 of the Packers 2025 Training Camp.

With Elgton Jenkins out due to a back issue, Sean Rhyan got some run at center with the first team along with Jocob Monk, who also rotated in at right guard. Jordan Morgan started at right guard and, as promised, also saw time at left tackle in place of Rasheed Walker.
New addition Nate Hobbs started at outside cornerback when the defense was in base, with second year safety Javon Bullard in the slot during the initial first team work.
Tucker Kraft got work early on in practice as a kick returner. Yes, you read that right.
Xavier McKinney picked up right where he left off in 2024, pulling in camp's first interception in the back of the endzone on a pass from Jordan Love intended for Dontayvion Wicks.
The Packers have gone from "Bo Melton isn't switching to cornerback full time" to...switching Bo Melton to cornerback full time. He now wears number 16.
After some perplexing snap counts last season, Lukas Van Ness, on day one of camp at least, was mostly lined up opposite Rashan Gary as a starting defensive end.
With Quay Walker on the PUP after having a clean out surgery for his ankle this offseason, Isaiah McDuffie got plenty of opportunities with the starters at inside linebacker. Isaiah Simmons was also in the mix and flashed the athleticism that we've heard so much about.
Brandon McManus made all six of his field goal attempts. What a difference a year makes.
Positive injury development: Micah Robinson (knee) was taken off of the physically unable to perform list and participated in practice.

LVN with the ones in the first actual team drills - it was Cox in walkthroughs. Everything else status quo.

Love to Reed to open practice off play action complete for a nice gain but McKinney would have had him lit up in an actual game.

Next play - LVN with a pressure, Love gets the ball off and threads a pass to Hardman for a big gain. Williams gambles to try and break it up but misses and Hardman was free.

Of note on the 2 minute drive - Travis Glover was with the 1’s at LG. Aaron Banks had come to the sideline grimacing right before that. Hopefully it’s nothing/happenstance.

Malik Heath and Kamal Hadden both got nicked up a bit as well.

As I’m typing this Aaron Banks is limping and not doing OL drills.

Hadden and Heath are going through special teams drills just fine so that’s a great sign.

Banks does now have his helmet on so we’ll see if he goes back in.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- How much is two snaps worth to an NFL player? For Green Bay Packers guard Sean Rhyan, it's more than $2 million.

Had he been on the field for two additional plays at any point in his first three NFL seasons (2022-24), Rhyan would have qualified for the proven performance escalator. That would have meant his 2025 base salary would have jumped to $3.406 million rather than the $1,363,571 he will earn under his original rookie deal.

That's a difference of $2,042,429 -- all because he came up two snaps short of hitting the 35% mark called for in Article 7, Section 4 of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement.

It states that if a player selected in Rounds 3-7 (Rhyan was a third-round pick in 2022) "participated in a minimum of 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays in any two of his first three regular season or participated in a 'cumulative average' of at least 35% of his Club's offensive or defensive plays over his first three regular seasons" then he would qualify for the raise, which is essentially equal to what a restricted free agent tender would be the upcoming season. Here's how Rhyan missed out:

• In his rookie season, he appeared in only one game but did not play a single snap on offense. He played one snap of special teams, which is not used in the calculation. According to data from the NFL Players Association and the league, which is used to calculate the percentages, the Packers had 1,094 offensive plays.

• In 2023, he played 183 snaps combined at right guard and left guard in a backup role out a possible 1,096 plays (16.7%).

• Last season, when he became a starter for the first time, he played 961 of a possible 1,082 offensive snaps (88.8%). During the first half of the season, Ryan split snaps with 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan. However, after Morgan was lost for the season due to a shoulder injury following Week 9, Rhyan played full time -- except for eight snaps in the second quarter of the Week 14 game at Detroit. He left the game after a collision with Detroit Lions linebacker Kwon Alexander but returned to finish the game.

• In all, it meant Ryan played in 1,144 of a possible 3,272 offensive snaps for the Packers over the past three seasons -- or 34.952% of the plays from 2022-24. At least he didn't miss by one snap. An additional play would have only gotten Ryan to 34.983%.

Rhyan's agent, Cameron Foster, said he believed Ryan had reached the 35% mark because of published snap counts online. For example, according to Pro Football Reference's snap counts, which are unofficial and not used by the NFL or the NFLPA, Rhyan would have qualified. Its count had Rhyan playing 1,146 of a possible 3,272 snaps (35.003%).

"[We had] him at 35% of snaps exactly," Foster told ESPN. "However, the NFL and NFLPA both had him just under. So, per the Packers they are not giving him the escalator. We are pretty disappointed about it for sure."

A source with knowledge of NFL contracts said some contracts contain specific language about not rounding up when it comes to statistical marks for incentives or escalators. The Packers couldn't just give Rhyan the raise even if they wanted to. They would have to extend his contract in order to change his 2025 pay, which also would have salary cap implications and also could impact future extensions should they decide to retain him behind this season.


Rhyan's original rookie contract was a four-year, $5.12 million deal that included a $905,712 signing bonus. However, he lost out on $235,000 of his base salary as a rookie because he was suspended for six games after being found in violation of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

In March, Rhyan was awarded an additional $697,006 in additional compensation through the NFL's performance-based pay program. That was the third-highest payout on the team behind left tackle Rasheed Walker's $925,612 and right tackle Zach Tom's $849,141. Each team had a pool of $14.128 million that is distributed based on playing time and salary levels. It rewards players with lower salaries who play significant roles on the team.

Rhyan is expected to compete for a starting job again this season at right guard. He could face competition from Morgan, who also is expected to battle Walker at left tackle.

Packers sign RB Israel Abanikanda off waivers from 49ers. He was a 5th round pick by the Jets in 2023.

Overview
A zone-scheme runner with early down size, Abanikanda can be a bit inconsistent with his reads and tempo early in the run. However, he has plant-and-go agility and is able to snap off cuts at tight angles to elude short-area traffic when needed. He has terrific top-end speed to gash a poorly fitted run front, but he needs to run with better discipline and downhill decisiveness to stay ahead of NFL speed. Abanikanda isn't much of a third down option, but he does have the size and talent to compete for a RB2/3 slot early on with a chance to move up the depth chart in time.

Ran for more than 100 yards in nine of 11 games last season, with 20 rushing touchdowns.
Lateral jump cuts to elude backfield pressure.
One-cut talent with feet for tight breaks.
Locates lane opportunities on the back side.
Impressive escapability in tight quarters.
Access to instant acceleration when he needs it.
Uses spin move for contact balance and to wiggle away from tacklers.
Former sprinter with breakaway speed in the open field.

Weaknesses

Change of direction is more segmented than fluid.
Runs with hurried tempo, bypassing timing of block development.
Fails to press the line of scrimmage deeply to manipulate linebacker flow.
Urgent but not overly creative early in the run.
Can be a little inconsistent as run finisher despite his size.
Has trouble keeping rusher in front of him in pass protection.

From a scouting report: “Garnett Hollis Jr. is a long and physical cornerback from West Virginia, boasting a 6'0", 203-pound frame that provides the ideal size to contend with bigger receivers and tight ends at the NFL level.”

Really impressive catch from Matthew Golden with the 1s. Love had time and hit Golden for about 25 yards on right sideline. Rookie kept his feet in and held on through great coverage from Nixon, who looked to have his hand on the ball. Packers loved Golden’s hands coming out.

Xavier McKinney is so damn smart. Calls out that it’s going to be a hard count before the play. He of course was right. Poor exchange with the center and love throws things off - love throws a 50/50 to Golden but it falls incomplete with Hobbs in coverage.

Malik Heath with an incredible twisting catch with Melton in great coverage. 26 yards. First down and out of bounds. Malik banged up on the play.

Williams with a catch over the middle followed by two runs by Wilson and a QB spike.

Willis got them to the 20 yard line. 37-yard fg upcoming for the win.
