Bullard has "draft capital" and therefore its tough for the regime to admit they fucked that one up (revisit last years draft thread if you forget where I stood on that one....just glad I am looking very wrong on Cooper). When we finally lose a game because they want to force him onto the field they may not have a choice.Originally posted by Fritz View PostIf as ACME claimed in an article today, when Hobbs comes back only two of the following three can be on the field at the same time (Valentine, Bullard, and Williams) in the nickel D, then I choose Valentine and Williams. Bullard tackles well but doesn't seem to cover well and isn't as good a safety as Williams nor as good a slot corner as Valentine is an outside corner. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary -- Vince Lombardi

The Green Bay Packers elected seven season-long captains for the 2025 season: quarterback Jordan Love, running back Josh Jacobs, tight end Tucker Kraft, defensive end Rashan Gary, linebacker Quay Walker, safety Xavier McKinney and linebacker Isaiah McDuffie.
Coach Matt LaFleur said the players wanted to vote for captains. They settled on three offensive captains, three defensive captains and one captain on special teams.
"Those guys are worthy of that recognition," LaFleur said Tuesday "They've all done the little things and we hold them to a high standard. I told them, eyes are always going to be on them. There is no off switch. Both in the building and out of the building. You have to be on point all the time. You guys have to set the standard and uphold the standard for everyone else.
All seven wore the captain "C" on their uniforms during Sunday's season-opening win over the Detroit LionsI can't run no more

It seems that he's playing faster than he used to - in the right way. He's lining guys up; he clearly understands the defense and the concepts now better than he did even a season-and-a-half ago, I think. Maybe he's been a late bloomer mentally and emotionally. He played well against Detroit.Originally posted by call_me_ishmael View PostQuay is a little surprising in that, NGL. Doesn't seem like he has that mental makeup but obviously I don't know the guy. Would have thought Nixon.
Regarding Bullard, I don't think he's horrible - he does tackle well and hard. But he seems to lack coverage skills. He's not a bad player, but I don't think he's as good as Williams at safety, nor is he a better slot corner than Valentine is an outside corner."The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."

Quay might be a slow learner like Nick Collins, but stick with same system for a minute or at least similar concepts and when he finally can play fast the athleticism takes over.....and he is a fucking athletic freak. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary -- Vince Lombardi

Good comparison. It took Collins a few years to figure it out, but once he did the pick looked great. Could very well be the same with Walker. He has obviously gained the respect of his teammates.Originally posted by bobblehead View PostQuay might be a slow learner like Nick Collins, but stick with same system for a minute or at least similar concepts and when he finally can play fast the athleticism takes over.....and he is a fucking athletic freak.

It looked like Walker started to catch on last year after the bye week. Had 3 good games week 10-12 then got hurt. There were only 4 games last year where Walker and Cooper played the majority of snaps in the same game. We saw the possibilities of what they can do together last week.I can't run no more

After seeing how Quay played in week one, it'll be interesting to see if he continues to be that impactful. Cuz if he does, does Gutey stretch that credit card debt even further to try to re-up the Quayster?"The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."

I'd say so. He's finally playing up to his potential, he's obviously well regarded by his team-mates (team captain). Having him and Edge as your 'backers gives the D so much versatility.Originally posted by Fritz View PostAfter seeing how Quay played in week one, it'll be interesting to see if he continues to be that impactful. Well, that X. McKinney must be a really crappy player then, because Hafley said McKinney played one of the best games Hafley has ever seen him play, saying that X executed the game plan without mistakes, was where he needed to be and communicated the necessary adjustments to the others.Originally posted by Joemailman View PostBest, worst PFF grades:
Top 5 defense
S Evan Williams: 90.5
DL Devonte Wyatt: 78.7
LB Edgerrin Cooper: 77.6
CB Carrington Valentine: 72.6
DL Lukas Van Ness: 68.7
Williams earned the team's first "elite" grade of the season after intercepting a pass in the red zone and giving up just one catch for five yards on three targets into his coverage.
Bottom 5 defense
DB Javon Bullard: 44.8
DL Nazir Stackhouse: 51.3
DE Kingsley Enagbare: 53.3
DL Karl Brooks: 53.9
S Xavier McKinney: 54.7
Bullard allowed 10 catches on 11 targets into his coverage and had a penalty, but he also had three stops and gave up just 7.2 yards per catch. Stackhouse played eight snaps but wasn't impactful against the run. Enagbare's 21 snaps resulted in zero pressures, two tackles and zero stops. Brooks produced only two hurries on 25 pass-rushins snaps. McKinney had five tackles without a miss, but he was credited with allowing Sam LaPorta's 32-yard catch, and he had a 15-yard penalty.
Or maybe PFF is given too much credit for superficial grades and evaluations it puts out???
For example, Hafley gave a lot of credit to McKinney for Williams interception. Hafley thought they were in trouble on that play based on the defense called. McKinney recognized it and communicated adjustments that got Williams in position to make the play.
“So, it was ‘X’, it was the pressure (on the quarterback) and then it was Evan, that were all involved in the interception.”
Hafley was making a point that players don’t have to have schemes drawn up for them to make big plays. Those opportunities are built into the defense and will come naturally if players do their assignments correctly
