    Doubs nets a 3rd at best imo. Probably a 4th a year later as a FA, maybe only a 5th the way they screw us on comp picks.

      This Watson extension is a good thing. Doubs being gone? Why? He's a damn good player who should also be extended. I'm pretty sure he will be. If anybody gets gone among the current crew of WRs, it's Wicks, and he has another year, I think, before a decision on him needs to be made.

        Can't keep everybody. And don't need to. Even with Doubs gone, you would have Golden, Watson, Reed, Wicks and Williams. Which would be more depth than most teams have.

          Take those five plus Doubs. How would you order them? I'd put Doubs third, no lower than fourth. First of all, we could easily in any given year keep six WRs. Secondly, somebody other than Doubs would or seemingly should be the odd man out. Money and contracts? Sure, a decision needs to be made and money would have to be spent on Doubs, same as it was on Watson. IMO, it would be worth it. IMO also, cap cooking or smart financing or whatever you might want to call it, there's not much within reason that can't be done. Negativists may think otherwise, but history seems to show that Gutekunst, Ball, LaFleur, etc. often take a can do attitude with regard to the cap, contracts, etc.

            I feel like the Williams deal with the Lions cost us about $4M on the Watson deal.

              That's you, Tex, whenever anyone mentions the cap or mentions a player's injury history or mentions a player's vulnerabilities.

              Romeo Doubs is a good receiver. I don't think anyone's questioning that. What people are questioning is whether it's realistic (really realistic, not just Tex's "cook the cap" mantra) to keep so many players going into second contracts. You've got to consider whether a player like Quay Walker or maybe Rasheed Walker would be more valuable to try to retain than Doubs.

              Then there's the injury aspect. Once a guy has a concussion, the probability exists that it will happen again. And again. Doubs seems to have had two last season. Not a good sign for the young man.

              Finally, Doubs did skip a practice or so to let the Packers know, last season, that he was unhappy with how he was being used (or not used). And that was before they drafted Golden and Williams. And with Christian Watson likely back at the beginning of November, and with Golden Williams being integrated into the offense more and more as the season goes on, it's fair to wonder if Doubs will once again feel overlooked. Especially if Wicks gets healthier and plays better. He gets open so well. And The Flower does seem to go out of his way to publicly announce how damn important Doubs is to the team. . .

              So it's fair to wonder if trading Doubs later this season, depending on the health of the WR room, would be smarter than letting him walk at the end of the season and getting a comp pick.

                Trading Doubs is unlikely. First there's always a question of injuries. The Packers are really going for it this year, and reliable, talented depth is valuable. Also, who would be a trade partner and for what? Teams would only trade for a receiver who will be a free agent if they are a playoff team in dire need of a receiver. So the Packers would be making a SB competitor stronger and themselves weaker. The only way it would make sense is if the Packers had a critical need at another position and found a team in the playoff hunt that needs receivers and has a decent spare in the position the Packers need.

                After the season, it will be a numbers game, and I suspect the Packers will use their money elsewhere, but there's always a chance of a re-sign, depending on what Doubs is asking for.

                  I guess you were referring to yourself in that first line hahaha.

                  Obviously cooking the cap doesn’t mean doing anything illegal or shady. It just means keeping on keeping on like Ball, Gutekunst, etc have done so well, not throwing away good talent or STUPIDLY rebuilding like some loser teams do while having consistently one of the very best rosters for literally decades now.

                  Ironic you mention those two players. I never liked Rasheed, and the other Walker IMO has been sort of a disappointment too.

                    @TomSilverstein

                    #Packers WR Christian Watson’s 1-year extension includes 3 effective voidable years ending in ‘29, upping his cap number slightly this year. He gets $6.07M SB and $1.1M base this year. Next year’s base: $3.425M plus $1.825M per-game roster, plus w/o and $2.25M incentives.

                    Ken - Packers Cap
                    @KenIngalls

                    The void years are not needed for cap - it's minimal savings. The void years allow for another extension next season (to circumvent the 12-month renegotiation waiting period).

                    This now allows Watson's contract to be extremely tradable if he wants a raise & Packers say no thanks.

                        Not sure about this. Hard to say between Watson, Reed and Doubs who you need more long term.

                            Doubs is a good NFL receiver. I picked him to lead the Packers in fantasy points this year. I also think it's not a huge drop off when he's unavailable. I suspect they'll only keep him next year if the price to extend his contract is pretty low.

                              He may want to go somewhere where he'll be no worse than their clear #2.

                                Maybe he prefers to stay where he is the clear #1?
