It's hard to assign blame or responsibility when we're not sure of the dynamics there - given that Guter doesn't have the power to hire and fire his own head coach. Does The Flower come to him and say "I need bigger offensive linemen" and Guter goes out and just does it? Or does Guter push back and say "We've made a living finding light, quick tackles in mid- and later rounds who can play inside if you run a zone scheme, but if you want to go heavy we'll have to draft those guys sooner since they're in higher demand"? Who decided the Packers' offensive line needed to get huge and they needed to run a power running game?

The Banks signing has sucked. The Hobbs signing has sucked. Weird from a GM who has had some nice successes - the Smith brothers, Rasheed Walker in the seventh, Tom in the fourth, plucking Rasul Douglass off wavers, his one year hit with that linebacker who went then signed a big contract and sucked (I've repressed the name). Guter's early drafts mostly were awful, but seem to have gotten better.

So I don't know how much is on Guter and how much on The Flower. Both have some responsibility, probably, but how much for each?

It sounds like you're saying an individual owner - Jones or Lurie or whatever - would be better than the shitload of owners the Packers have. First of all, it ain't gonna happen. Secondly, it almost certainly would not be better. True about the recent fuck ups you mentioned as well as the slightly less recent successes. However, Going back to Lombardi, there is a long tradition of greatness - except for a couple decades that weren't so great. So either the system works, or else we've just been pretty damn lucky most of the time.
What could be more GOOD and NORMAL and AMERICAN than Packer Football?

Not at all. I am fine with a Team President and CEO reporting to a board (mainly the Executive Committee).

I'd prefer to go back to the GM making all the calls for football and getting the non-football CEO out of works. But Gutes and Ball were apparently battling with McCarthy so Murphy stepped in.

I was referring to Fritz's post. I agree with you, before Murphy, the team president - Harlan or the guy before him - mostly kept their nose out of football operations, and that was a pretty good thing. Murphy, of course, was not exactly a non-football type of guy, though. Another Vince Lombardi might be best, but they don't grow on trees, especially nowadays.

But Murphy was a football guy. A safety for the Redskins, back when.

Yes, which probably gives him an edge to some degree. But I also don't want my plumber running the city water supply.

Policy has an admin background, that's it. He should not be in charge of hiring, overseeing and settling disputes between contract, personnel and coaching.

Murphy's and Policy's backgrounds were very different. Murphy was not just a player, but one who played for a HOF coach and played in 2 Super Bowls. He knew what a championship football organization looked like. He was also an athletic director which means he had had a lot of experience hiring coaches. Policy's background has been strictly administrative. I would like to see him return the Packers to a strong GM format, although I doubt it will happen.

TRUTH BE TOLD, neither of them deserves are 4 year extension.

GUTEBAG really shit the bed in free agency.

And the Flower looks lost; but part of that is the personnell changes made by Gutegag.

If we had to choose (perhaps anoother poll i coming) one coach to retrain, would it even be the Flower ?
Not sure how you can be down on LaFleur. All he has done since he arrived is win. This season the OL is kind of a mess. I guess he is partly to blame because he probably had the discussion with Gutes about moving Jenkins, about training Morgan as a guard and other issues, but bottom line, the talent situation is Gutes job. MiLF is doing his job. He turned Love into an NFL QB. He gets by with a bevy of talent, but no difference makers at WR. He has consistently been in the playoffs and winning games. I'm not sure what massive improvement at head coach you think is out there. Maybe Eberflus is available.
