From a hiring perspective:

If it's true Leonhard declined the DC job several years ago, then Gannon knocks the interview out of the park, I don't see why you would wait for the potential of he who previously declined and risk the loss of he who knocked it out of the park.

It's a bit like turning down a hot woman who fits all of your criteria and is really into you, for a hot woman who previously rejected you.

Tom Landry invented the Flex Defense, in part, to stop the Packers power sweep. He was the Giants DC when Lombardi was their OC.

I think the problem with your analogy is that many posters here don't see Gannon as a hot woman. They see him more like a woman who used to be hot because she had good makeup and outfits, but has since skanked out.
