Reed plays almost exclusively in 3 WR sets. He rarely is on the field in 2 WR sets because the Packers see him as just a slot receiver. Pretty sure they feel Golden has more flexibility as far as being able to play inside or outside. The trading of Wicks will impact how they use Golden much more than how they use Reed.

NFL owners and GMs scuttlebutt held that they wanted to deflate the off-ball linebacker, cornerback and Tackle market since last year's FA set a new records for a modest talent (Dan Moore Jr over 20 mil APY for a Tackle). Walker hit FA in the wrong year and didn't have a bidding war to help. This is a surprise? Not to me. It just shows the relative importance of the two position groups. It's more that an inconsistent but talented WR will make some positive plays, whereas an inconsistent but talented LT will miss some plays that will be really bad for the team. A LT has to be very consistent at assignments or the whole offense falls apart.2025 Ratpickers champion.Comment

A LT messes up, and the QB has to use his mobility. We have seen that an extreme number and percentage of times for literally decades with the Packers. Then the good mobile QB produces success - not because of the O Linemen, but in spite of them. That's both the Rodgers years and the Love years as well as the situation for a helluva lot of other teams. You need to have those "yokozumas" there to take up the space, but if you have just about anybody this side of Marshall House, the team's success doesn't depend on them.What could be more GOOD and NORMAL and AMERICAN than Packer Football?Comment

I saw a line in an ACME article recently that suggested owners/Gm's made a concerted effort to push back on free agent salaries for offensive tackles, corners, and . . . shit, I forgot the third position mentioned. The tackle part was traced directly back to the ? Dan Morgan (is that his name?)contract. So Walker might've been part of a bigger effort to hold the line on salaries for that position. As a R5 pick traded for a R5+R6, I agree with patler on the trade value. Wicks getting a bigger extension than Watson got (12.5M vs. 11M) is interesting.
Wicks was going to be a WR4 in GB, plus he has had injuries and drops, and is in his last contract year. This frees up needed snaps for Savion and Golden. This is also a move with an eye toward the future roster - after 2026, only Golden and Savion are under contract in the WR room. If they draft a WR this helps resets the clock on the WR room a bit more.
The trade also frees up about $3M in cap space, which probably contributes to extensions to either Watson or Kraft (or Wyatt).
I think they almost had to trade either Reed or Wicks, and Reed is more explosive. I like Reed, but he has a bit of an injury history and IDK if they will give him (and Watson) an extension. Reed, Golden, Melton and Moore are all smaller WRs and LaFleur likes bigger WRs for blocking. I'd assume Gute drafts a bigger WR like Hurst, Stribling, or Surratt in the mid rounds.
It's a good move by Gute IMO. it also is a good move for PHI, who are supposedly trading Brown to NE after June 1.
All that said, I liked Wicks as a prospect and player, and wish him the best of luck unless he's playing GB.Comment

I just think Wicks is a potentially really good player. It's been three years and we haven't seen it yet, but I could see him having a great year as the #3 option there. The talent is undeniable, he just can't hold on to the ball.
Wouldn't shock me to see him have a big year and get a large extension, which is why Philly locked him up for another year. If he has a big year I imagine he'll be griping about his extension and he'll be dealt again since I doubt Philly can afford to pay him.
That, or he has a good year and they move on from AJB.Comment

Wicks was really interesting. He'd have that occasional monster game - the Detroit game at Thanksgiving last year, when he single-handedly (literally in one or two instances) carried the ball (and the team). He was dominating. He was like watching Sterling Sharpe or Davante Adams. Strong, a man amongst boys. But then he'd disappear for games at a time, and you'd wonder why the hell they weren't getting him the ball. And then there were the drops from two seasons ago. An exciting guy who, if he can be consistent and play like he did in the Detroit game, looks like a super star. But then, if he can't he's just another guy.
