I agree. That was the one head-scratcher that I had with the picks this year.Originally posted by The ShadowI was mildly surprised when Desmond Bishop was drafted.
He seems to be an Abdul Hodge clone.
Maybe the Packers sensed something with Hodge and drafted Bishop
to be that type of player/fit that role - as a replacement."There's a lot of interest in the draft. It's great. But quite frankly, most of the people that are commenting on it don't know anything about what they are talking about."--Ted Thompson

Being a porn star would be fun; if I didn't have a job or a good marriage I'd enjoy auditioningTERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Thank you FLOWER

Here we go again with the Barnett bashing. Statistically, sorry to say, he is right up there with Urlacher. The only thing Barnett doesn't have that Urlacher does, was playig for a shitty defense and being the only one that could play early on. That's how he got his name. It sure isn't his play because he gets blown up as much as if not more then any other MLB in the NFL. Sure, he makes tackles, covers well and moves to the ball well. Barnett's only drawback was his OVER pursuit, not his tackling, not his coverage skills and not his speed or size. Last season he did not over pursue very much if at all.
The media crowned Urlacher a god when the Bears defense was aweful. Barnett sorry to say hasn't had the media up his ass since day one like Urlacher. Like it or not, Hodge will NEVER beat out Barnett, thusly, according to your own logic, he will NEVER be like Urlacher."Once the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the Republic.”
I said he COULD, by saying I THINK he will be better than Urlacher.Originally posted by woodbuck27Saying that Abdul Hodge will be better than Brian Urlacher has no basis objectively Tarlam.
On what basis could any of us attest to that prediction, given that Urlacher is one of the premiere defensive players in the NFL today and possibly it's best MLBer?
I have zero premise. I just believe it. I am in no way Harvey or WISTy, people who know the game.
My balls just say to me "Hodge is the real deal".
Wow. My balls speak to me only of matters other than football.
But I admire your balls' ability to multi-task. You could, conceivably, revve up for some "sexytime" while simultaneously evaluating football players.
No wonder you do well in business."The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."

Interesting, Tarlam. Why?Originally posted by Tarlam!OK. Enough about balls.
I just have a kool aidey like of Hodge.
I saw him play in only a handful of college games, and certainly had no reason to focus on him at the time. Saw little of him last year for the Pack, because he played very little. BUT... I am developing an uneasy feeling about him.
Why? Two reasons.
1. Any backup LB that gets pulled of special teams for a team that is not real good at special teams raises a question in my mind. LBs should be sort of made for STs. Their skills are just what you look for to fill a lot of the special teams spots. Especially a linebacker who is supposed to be a physical, tackling machine. Now if he were a big, run stuffing LB, I could see it. But Hodge is small for a linebacker. He's more like a safety. SHould have been a big contributer on STs.
2. OK, this is a bad reason, but, have you seen anything positive about him since last training camp. Anything this off season? Anything from OTAs? Any fluff piece at all? Any positive comment from a coach about his effort, training, desire?
I have a feeling he may just fade away, in favor of bigger and/or faster linebackers who can contribute on STs.. Maybe it will happen even this season.

Mabe I'm still high on the post draft reports that said we maybe got the steal of the draft with Hodge....
Maybe I just want that to be true. But, I also saw his interviews, I took a shine to the guy.
If he is in a nose dive, I hope he pulls out of it.

I hope you're right and I'm wrong. There really isn't anything to get excited about among the linebackers behind the starters. Somebody needs to step up. Reserve linebackers need to find ways to contribute, either pushing for starting positions or on special teams. Hodge was inactive last year, even when healthy, because both Taylor and White were ST performers. He will have no future if that continues with guys like White, Bishop, Havner, Simpson or Johnson ahead of him on game days.Originally posted by Tarlam!Mabe I'm still high on the post draft reports that said we maybe got the steal of the draft with Hodge....

From what I remember on the pre-draft reports, Hodge was not as athletic as Greenway but was able to make just as many plays/tackles because he had good instincts and a motor. I think it's fair to say Hodge has talent; I'd like to see him play well this year.
It's true SEA was one game and that's not enough to determine whether he can play or not. Patler does raise a couple of interesting points...if he was pulled from ST, that's not a good sign. You'd expect a 3rd round LB to play more & make more noise (in a good way) than he has thus far. I was glad when TT picked him last year, but now I'm worried. I hope Hodge comes around.

Not true Patler, not true. How can you not be excited about Johnson and Simpson, two athletic, physical dope-smoking fiends?Originally posted by PatlerI hope you're right and I'm wrong. They both appear to have good size and speed and were passed over merely because their off-the-field pasttime involves smoking the leaves of certain plants indigenous to the Americas. Kind of unlikely they'll get into any nightclub trouble - they'd be too mellowed out.
I for one am very excited about the backup linebackers this year, if those two fellas make it."The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."
