It's only a handful of people that want to have nasty exchanges. But that's all it takes. In an envirnoment like this, the least civil people are able to set the tone. It doesn't work that way in real life, but in anonymous internet forum, people can be assholes with little risk.

When some people get frustrated that argument is not going their way, they ignore the topic and attack character of person arguing against them. Oldest and cheapest trick in the book.

Also, there's an angry-young-man style. You hear it on the Jim Rome Show. My problem with this is it is stupid. I'm glad I'm not on a playground any more.

As to Partial's question, is it a bad thing? Not necessarily. Some people like to fight in schoolyard style, and even more like to watch others try and rip each other.

This thread had a lot of good discussion. But I doubt people will be inclined to bring-up such a sensitive topic again, the arguing was too unpleasant and childish. Some think that is a good thing. I think that more interesting conversations get discouraged by the shit-talk, and that is a loss. Interesting people fade away.

I think you'd read things differently if YOU gave people the benefit of the doubt. I didn't take Skin's early posts as that demeaning, but it seemed like you were the one that escalated it. I think it's the commie side of you coming out, or maybe you are just a contrarian, or maybe not.

I read Skin's posts like I would watch a Denis Leary comedy show. He sounds angry, but he's only a little angry, but goes over the top to prove his point. Mad, Nutz, and Murph do the same things in their own weird ways.

I regret sincerely that I allowed the BS to get to me HH, as you were 'in fact' doing your best to try to set a different tone.

As I said before. If I had just read on a few more posts I wouldn't have felt compelled to make last nights post. I came up through the thread as if 'it was live' and reacted, and that was an error.

It's OVER as far as I'm concerned. I believe we may have learned a little from this experience.

Well, you didn't take Skin's posts as demeaning because you agreed with them. Others found them insulting, and out of place in a serious discussion.
What you see as "contrarian" or "commie" views are those that you disagree with.

I'm not sure people are aware of how little diversity there is in this group. It's a very conservative, traditional group. And not especially tolerant.

As far as escalating, I continued to challenge Skinbasket, shooting him in the butt with a BB-gun at his every attempt to dodge and weave. I am all for arguing!

I am never offended by Skinbasket or Madtown, am well aware of their schtick. I think the Denis Leary style was inappropriate in this topic, however. Somebody opens up about something personal, and you're gonna smash um when they are in a vulnerable postion? Nah, that's chicken shit.
Nutz argues like an angry 13-year-old and sends the debate south. There's really just a very few people in the whole forum that get vicious, and then only on their bad days.
