                  • OK… I guess my pilot light never has stopped burning for the Mariners in some ways. I was a kid in 1977 when I moved here from Tennessee, it was the debut year of the franchise. Back then, there were no major league sports teams in Nashville. This city, this team, the Kingdome it all seemed so larger than life….so “glamorous” and so “big town” to me.

Then there was “the voice”. He was with us and our franchise from the beginning. You don’t realize how much you can take something for granted until it is gone. You don’t realize how someone you have never met can infiltrate your heart and soul on such a deep and almost familial level. That was Dave Niehaus. He was with “us” from the beginning. He was family, “our” family.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard Dave had passed. I started to cry and then I tried to catch myself and stop but I couldn’t. I couldn’t grasp why I was feeling so overwhelmed. I couldn’t mentally grasp at that moment just how this gentleman affected the fiber of our town and really took root in us; my emotions obviously were in full swing before my intellect. Then, I looked around me… I was not alone. Everyone around me was silent, tears streaming down their cheeks and looks of disbelief on their faces. It was like the city’s heart collectively stopped for a moment. We never thought it would end.

Even when the Mariners were at their worst, and that has been quite a bit, you could not help but tune in to listen to him, he made it bearable, laughable, fun... even in the most dark days. “MY OH MY… IT’S GRAND SALAMI TIME!”…and when the Mariners were at their best, 1995, Dave made it oh so much sweeter.

Now… tonight….it’s opening night at Safeco Field. Marilyn, Dave’s widow, is throwing out the first ball. It’s close to game time and I have butterflies in my stomach. Our hearts are heavy yet it’s time for us to face the Season without our friend.

Today was the first day it has been sunny, spectacularly beautiful actually, in 41 days here in Seattle. I like to think that somehow God made this day for Dave.

The Mariners… love ‘em, hate ‘em, indifferent to them… doesn’t’ matter tonight. Seattleites are all Mariners Fans tonight. Dave is with us all tonight.I don’t think there will be a single soul in Seattle that won’t be tuned in. So… I’ve dusted off my white “Dave Loafers”, popped a glass of Chardonnay and am getting ready to settle in to what will surely be a night to remember. God Bless you Dave…. your "voice" will never be "silenced" and your presence will always be felt.

(Macklemore may not be the best artist on the planet, but this song has the tears streaming...kinda speaks for us all tonight)

                      • before the mariners there was the pilots.......who moved to milwaukee. you could be a brewer fan too.

(not tonight though. they played like a piece of shit tonight.)

nice story cheesy. thanks for sharing. I'll feel that way if and when Ueck passes. he was the lone voice when the team was soo bad for so many years. I remember my first game as a kid. all those opening days growing up. understanding what a true tailgate party is. the smell of charcoal and bratwurst. county stadium. ........and Bob Uecker. (just a bit outside, he shot the conner and missed, get up get out of here gone!)

YES! We had the Pilots!! Mike bought a Pilot's Jersey for me... (it was an overseas "knock off" but it's amazingly authentic looking and really good quality believe it or not- enough so that Wisconsin and Washington fans alike and "in the know" stop me and make comments about it... all positive and wanting to know where to get one- cool! ) and of course then promptly informed me of the Milwaukee move and kinda rubbed in his superior baseball knowledge! lol!

I don't think (haven't checked yet) the Brewers could have POSSIBLY played a worse game than the Mariners tonight. Right now it is the bottom of the fifth inning and we are losing to the frickin' Indians 12-0....but you know what...it doesn't matter... there is such a cool vibe going on (even though in the fourth inning, I think it was, I actually heard a player drop the "F" bomb on our local station..lolz!)...OH WAIT... STOP THE PRESSES.. GOOD NEWS... we just got a run!!! YAY! 12-1... now we're cookin'... runners on first and second with two outs?.. no problem... anyway... I digress...

Back to the "cool vibe"... I can only imagine Dave calling this game... you can feel the positive vibe in the stadium, it is palpable and indisputable and delicious....no matter what the score board says!!!

I hear what you're sayin' about those memories... I compartmentalized mine and they came back ten fold with the passing of Mr. Niehaus.

                          PS Whiskey...

You'll be happy to know that the Yankees took a dump to the BOSOX today... lol! That shit pitcher we had in there was "yanked" (if you will) after only two innings and giving up, I think it was, 6 legit runs to Boston... I still loves me some Yankees though!

                            • I went fishing with a buddy this morning, on the big lake. We limited out on coho with one king in less than an hour and half. at one point we had 5 fish on at the same time. there were times when we would barely get a pole back in the water and we would have a fish on it. As we were pulling in our lines we had two hit. we had to start throwing fish back! I have never had the fish bite like this. it was crazy. Now i have a freezer full! guess whats for dinner tonight?
