quite a few orchards out here by me. Apples, cherries, peaches and such. I've got a couple friends who are farmers. FYI, it is a very time consuming hobby. ie you only have so long to spray them after a rain or else they will grow a fungus that will ruin the fruit. any other questions let me know and I can gather the answers.

Also, did you know that if you take the seeds from an apple (lets say granny smith) and plant them. you may not get a granny smith apple tree. the seed will reproduce the type of tree that the pollen came from. All apple trees are made up of two tees grafted together. one to determine the fruit and the other to determine the size.

We grow apples with limited succses here in South Central Alaska (other than crab apples) and all hardy/successful trees are grown from Siberian rootstock.

Interesting. Ty was unaware that trees operated like vitis vinifera.

Be forewarned, though, apple trees attract deer.
Yes, I do want apple and cherry...but I wanted to know if you all had any suggestions on what type of apple and cherry trees...I should have stated that. Also, pear and plum trees grow excellent here in WV. They're dormant during the fall/winter.

My father in law has an orchard of apple trees and he has a deer problem. He had to put up a 10 foot fence because they were destroying his trees and his garden. I have a feeling i'll be doing the same if I start one.

Thanks for the input...if I have any other questions I'll be sure and pm you. I didn't know that about the seeds. That's very interesting.

Just go the the closest University cooperative extension in the area. They will be able to tell you everything you will need to know.

Just wait till fall and then solve the problem.

like was mentioned before, deer and venison.

Oh I will...but there's a limit on the number of deer you can kill. I see 10-20 deer a day from my house.

not if you have nuisance tags. then your limited by the amount of ammo you can afford and the amount of pain your shoulder can endure.
