The only sad thing on there is "Jungleland".....

"Darkness on the Edge of Town"--now THAT'S sad.

      • With her killer graces and her secret places
That no boy can fill with her hands on her hips
Oh and that smile on her lips
Because she knows that it kills me
        With her soft french cream
Standing in that doorway like a dream
I wish she'd just leave me alone
Because french cream won't soften them boots
And french kisses will not break that heart of stone
        With her long hair falling
And her eyes that shine like a midnight sun
        Oh-o she's the one, she's the one

        That thunder in your heart
At night when you're kneeling in the dark
It says you're never gonna leave her
But there's this angel in her eyes
        That tells such desperate lies
And all you want to do is believe her
And tonight you'll try just one more time
To leave it all behind and to break on through
Oh she can take you, but if she wants to break you
She's gonna find out that ain't so easy to do
And no matter where you sleep tonight or how far you run
        Oh-o she's the one, she's the one

        Oh-o and just one kiss
She'd fill them long summer nights
With her tenderness that secret pact you made
Back when her love could save you from the bitterness
Oh she's the one, oh she's the one
Oh she's the one, oh she's the one
Oh she's the one, oh she's the one

How could that make you sad, MJZ???

        • The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks

Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road

Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken

There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
          So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win

There's something given up there. Something lost. Don't know exactly. Is it in the melody? The struggle?

OMG--the highlight of the trip: In between Verona and Belleville is a town called Basco. For those of you familiar with Dane county--about two miles south of Paoli, you turn east onto Henry Road. About two tenths of a mile on the left is Dot's Bar. Park in the gravel lot on the west side of the house and go down the stairs to the basement. (That's right, in case you missed it--the bar is in the basement of somebody's house!!!) If you're over 6 feet tall, you aren't gonna be comfortable down there. Anyway, 4 cans of beer cost $5.00, the jukebox played four country songs for a buck, and EVERYONE in the place was intoxicated when we got there about 4:30 on Friday. A good time was had by all. I'm DEFINITELY going back.

4 stars out of 5--go yourself and tell Shirley Iron Mike sent you.

                New Glarus:

I had 2 New Glarus Tail Waggers with lunch at The Ott Haus

I had about 5 wine samples at the Primrose Winery

I had 3 LaCrosse Lagers at the Sportsmens Bar

I had 2 New Glarus Totally Nakeds at Deininger's

I had 1 New Glarus Yokel at Puempel's Old Tavern (bartender was a bitch)

I had 3 samples of Spotted Cow, Fat Squirrel and Road Slush at New Glarus Brewery

By the time I got to Dot's it was Old Style all the way.

(Never made it to Capital Brewery..... )

I forgot what I had at The Essen Haus--but it was GOOOOOOOOD!!!!

On one level, the songs may seem sad because they are really about people in a blue collar situation whose lives seem to be taking them nowhere. However, a common thread in the songs is that the writer refuses to succumb to the despair that seems to surround him. As he says at the end of Thunder Road, "It's a town full of losers, but I'm pulling out of here to win." That's only sad if you think he can't possibly win. Even then, I would argue that sadness really comes from accepting your dismal fate, instead of going down with a fight.

I suppose it is a mark of Springsteen's greatness that his songs can lead to a discussion like this one.
                  I can't run no more
                  With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
                  Say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
                  A thundercloud
They're going to hear from me - Leonard Cohen

That's why I'm saying "Darkness on the Edge of Town" has the sad songs:

In the summer that I was baptized
my father held me to his side
As they put me to the water
he said how on that day I cried
We were prisoners of love, a love in chains
He was standin' in the door I was standin' in the rain
With the same hot blood burning in our veins
                    Adam raised a Cain

                    All of the old faces
                    ask you why you're back
                    They fit you with position
and the keys to your daddy's Cadillac
In the darkness of your room
your mother calls you by your true name
You remember the faces, the places, the names
You know it's never over it's relentless as the rain
                    Adam raised a Cain

In the Bible Cain slew Abel
and East of Eden he was cast
You're born into this life paying
for the sins of somebody else's past
Daddy worked his whole life for nothing but the pain
Now he walks these empty rooms looking for something to blame
You inherit the sins, you inherit the flames
                    Adam raised a Cain

Lost but not forgotten, from the dark heart of a dream
                    Adam raised a Cain

                    • But I don't have Darkness on the Edge of Town so I wouldn't know. Yet The Wall does not make me sad except for one verse in Comfortably Numb

                      When I was a child
                      I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
the child is grown, the dream is gone

The rest of his trip down insanity lane, I'm fine with but this and Bruce expecting Mary to take off with him because she's alright and all the other guys are gone. And don't get me started on Eddie.

Here's an earlier version of "Thunder Road" called "Wings For Wheels"

I guess I can see the desperation at the situation (with some inherent sadness,) but I also see the hope for the future:

                        Wings For Wheels
The screen door slams, Christine's (Angelina's) dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
(Hey) that's me (babe) and I want you only
                        Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone (in that mirror) again tonight
Don't run back inside, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe you (we) ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith (well woman) there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey (baby, ah) you're alright
                        And that's alright with me
                        This 442 is gonna overheat
Make up your mind girl I gotta get her back out on the street
I know you're lonely like me so baby don't try and fake it
I'm no prince and I can't lay the stars at your feet
But I got this old car and she's pretty tough to beat
There's plenty of room in my front seat, baby if you wanna take it

Oh roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
It's like the rushing touch, the dirty wings them highway Angels wear
Well tonight we're gonna find out how it feels
I'm gonna trade in your wings - for wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks
Ah, mama, come take my hand (Well now try hard Chrissie to understand)
We're gonna ride all the way to the promised land
Oh I'm gonna dance all the way, dance all the way
(Babe if you're born with nothing in your hands
                        Hey it's your only chance)
Well I don't know but baby I've been told
There's something waiting for us, down that dirty road
Oh take a chance, take a chance, take a chance
(Oh I wish you would come
So leave what you've lost, leave what's grown old on Thunder Road)

Well now I bought this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
I got my car parked out back if you're ready to take that long walk
                        >From your front porch to my front seat
Well I think we could take it all babe, just you and me
Climb in back baby, the ride's for free
Oh come take my hand, we're gonna ride all the way to the promised land

If we take our chance, take our chance

Now the season's over and I feel it getting cold
I wish I could take you to some sandy beach where we'd never grow old
Ah but baby you know that's just jive
But tonight's bustin' open and I'm alive
Oh do (baby) what you can to make me feel like a man
                        But this 4/4/2's gonna overheat
Make up your mind girl, I gotta get her back out on the street
I know you're lonely like me, oh so don't fake it
And maybe I can't lay the stars at your feet
But I got this old car and she's pretty tough to beat

Oh if you think you can make it, climb in (So Christine climb in)
