  • Crazy story... I was victim of theft at the airport today

... I am not making this up.

So, gfriend bought me a new cam for Christmas - used it for some Packer games, New Years and St. P's day. Uploaded all my pixs last night on my PC.

Went to the airport in Burbank like usual for my weekly flight (now in Salt Lake City).

Put the cam in my duffel bag - it's a tiny puddle jumper so I have to 'gate check' the bag. This means I give my bag to a handler and they put it on the plane (as we board).

Get to SLC, notice my bag is open - look for the cam and it's missing. Contact a Delta supervisor and they contact the Ramp Shift Manager (responsible for baggage, fuel, etc.).

I report my camera missing - they find the camera case but no camera!

I file w/ Delta but also realize that it was stolen. I call the police in Burbank, routed to Airport Police and file a report. The woman officer was very incompetent - called back and said, "I called LOST and found - we'll give it a couple days." Hell no, there's one or two guys working on that flight that are at your airport stealing/violating people's bags!

So, my optometrist is on the city council. I call him - he gives me great advice and says, "Contact this guy - he's the Exec Dir of Airport Authority - over the cops and tell them I told you to call -- and that you'll write a letter to the AA and cc the whole council if they don't do their due diligence."

    So, I did.

Instead of the AA I got the Chief of the Airport Police - within 30 seconds he knows who the likely candidates are (since the SLC guy searched his folks w/i minutes of the plane landing and me reporting missing items). He said he'd take care of it immediately and personally (FINALLY - someone with at least 1% of their brain operating).

I get a call back - they won't search the locker b/c there's not enough probable cause ( ). BUT, he said they haven't had thefts from bags in years and another person reported a theft this weekend (2 in 3 days). So, we'll see if they narrow it down (hmm, look at the schedules?, open a friken locker...). The woman cop who was rude/clueless was a rook in training - hope I didn't get her into too much trouble. :P

i won't see my cam again but I may get money from Delta, or the travel insurance or VISA (gfriends). I hope they catch this mofo and "protect and serve" all the patrons of the airport. Heck, I have to practically strip and they go over ever inch of our stuff each week but sit idly by while they've got a clear thief under their noses.

All in all, I could have not uploaded my pics, could have not realized my cam was stolen until this evening while unpacking, couldn't have had them find my empty case in the cargo hold, etc, etc.

I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else and just a good lesson to trust no one and don't take no for an answer.

Fosco33, you've already taken it further than 99% of people would. Good thing you wear glasses. Your optometrist on the city council really came in handy.

Bottom line, we are all vunerable while traveling, entrusting our possessions to total strangers. Everybody knows the airlines do little supervision of their baggage handlers. The guys do it because they know they can get away with it.

It's too bad that it takes threats to make the system work and become responsive to the little guy. I hope you get your camera back (a miracle) and/or equal satisfaction out of Delta, etc.

The confusion and run around you got reminds me of why something like government run health care would be a disaster. The more layers of bureaucracy there is, the more unwieldy something becomes. The problem is compounded when people simply do not do their jobs correctly.

Thanks, Kiwon - in part, I took this farther than most to show my Dad that you can't stop after hearing 'no' or accepting someone else's stupidity.

I totally agree on the health care remark - I've been in HC consulting on the ins/admin side for 5 years. While Medicare's total cost of operations as a % of 'payments' is lower than commercial insurance, so is their reimbursement rate (cash factor). CARE also has tons of eligibility/billing rules (surprised) that you have to follow to the 't' - think tax submission on crank.

Stinks this kind of stuff happens. Practically get molested by airport security and then in turn get ripped off.

Good news is you saved your pics!! The camera can be replaced.

Well, kudos to you for sticking up for yourself. I'd have probably gotten furious and swore off flying Delta again (for the umpteenth time) and folded up tent with the first "no" and gone home.

Man, oh man, I had no idea I was talking with a HC insurance pro. You have to be a genius if you really "get it." I'm surrounded by Korean geniuses in math, science, and technology but they have never had to face the US health insurance industry. Now there's a real test of skill!

I have an "airport" horror story.

I was flying out of Eau Claire, WI on one of those Northwest AirLink puddle jumpers. Now anyone that has ever flow out of a small airport can appreciate it when I say that you go through security and then walk out on the tarmac to get into the plane and the flight attendant uses the intercom to speak to 10 people who are eight feet in front of her.

Anyway, as I was through security and waiting for the rest of the people to get through, an old man in his 90's I would guess gets strip searched while the Middle Eastern woman waring a burka walked straight through. Ah TSA, gotta love em. Well that isn't even the weird part. As we are waiting for everyone to pass security, the middle eastern woman GOES OUT THE SECURITY DOOR TO THE TARMAC AND STARTS DIGGING IN THE PLANE! Now, no one in security noticed when she walked right by TSA and out the door which was supposed to be locked and no one caught her until she spent 5 minutes digging around in the baggage compartment of the plane. All they did was escort her back in and continue to load the plane as normal. All of us were sitting there just floored and we all said that we weren't going to fly with this nut case. But because we live in a politically correct society TSA said everything was fine and we were over reacting....GEE HOW COMFORTING!

Thats ruff Fos. I think this guy should also get a beatdown.

You may recall me mentioning my camcorder and camera got ganked at the Niner game we went to in Dec. I dont care about the actually goods anymore but I would give alot to have back the stuff that was on them. You got the part that cant be replaced so dont feel too bad. You will get your $$$ and by then the same camera will likely be cheaper.

                  That sucks, Fosco.

Ya know, with all the video survelliance that an airport has, you'd think that the entire baggage handling process would somehow be on tape as well.

Merlin - I hate those little planes! I remember once I had to fly from Wausau to Minneapolis and they had the 4 passengers sit in certain parts of the plane to help balance the weight! Worst part of those planes, there is no damn beverage service and I hate flying!!

Well judging by the fact you are alive and posting you were in fact overreacting. And a bit prejudice.

Yeah, I recall - I felt bad for you and still do - that sucked. And yes, could've been worse. Just ironic that the people who are supposed to protect you couldn't care less if they've got someone w/ full access to lots of goods in a 'secure area'. Just think about the other shit they could get away with... I'm glad they're doing an investigation - but it took way too much complaining for the average person.

LOL....I wouldn't expect anything different from you. The PC above all costs crowd will cost us this country yet.

It's only called profiling if you are picking out someone based on your own beliefs (which I did not, facts are facts whether you like it or not). When you are looking for Islamic terrorists, you don't strip search the 90 year old white guy and let the middle eastern woman play in the plane on her own.

Overreacting? I don't think so. Prejudice? I don't think so. You among all others in the PC crowd don't let reality interfere with your logic. I have nothing against this woman but give me a break. She friggin walked out to the damn plane and started screwing around in there unsupervised and I am prejudicial? I don't care where she was from, that is some shit you just don't do. Kind of like taking the 9/11 high jackers seats, yelling about how bad the US is in Arabic and then asking for seatbelt extensions when you didn't need them. Oh I might add, you weren't in your assigned seats either. So let me guess, they have every right to sue because they were stupid enough to do shit like that? NOT But alas, I am sure you would award them millions if you were on the jury because as we all know, the majority in this country must be discriminated against for the stupidity of a few. We might hurt someone's feelings....

Fos, I agree with Mad. I'm glad you downloaded the pics because I have felt worse about losing a memory card than I would have felt about losing the camera itself.

Mad, have you looked on ebay or craigslist for your stuff?

Merlin, I don't care who she is, be it the Islamic woman or the 90-year-old, if someone's screwing around with an airplane I'm about to board, I want it checked into--and that passenger and her luggage removed.

No, I don't think random screenings are designed to stop "islamic terrorists". Last time I checked, terrorism is not mutually exclusive to people of islamic descent. Was the unibomber islamic? I think not. What about Richard Jewel? Again, nope. Saying shit like that is what gets your ass kicked.

Richard Jewel was exonerated so that's a poor example.

Racial profiling at airports seems appropriate following 9/11.
