Man, I feel like a consumer activist. Most people who meet me determine I should be in sales or law.
So check this, my car tripped an engine warning light on a Sunday driving back from NorCal for a wedding trip. As I drive back, the car goes over 80K (time for a new one!).
Well, I bought the used car and a decent extended warranty (2/24K) - while I haven't driven the 24K - the year has lapsed. The dealer tells me the catalytic converter is shot and it will cost about a grand to fix.... I got a cheaper labor quote from an independent shop AND played another independent shop by not negotiating on payment or labor but a blind estimate. Here's why!
There are secret 'lemon laws' that most car manufacturers don't let consumers know about. Thanks to my Dad and Google - I found out about the 8 yr/80K federal rule for long term defects with emission parts! But here's the funny part, my car is about a tank of gas over 80K miles now ----
Had to call Nissan and negotiate an override - we'll see if they play ball. If not, I can actually take them on a small claims given the overall circumstances (timing of occurrence, location, etc.) - and they should pay for over 75%.
Anyone need help dealing with companies and need advice, I'm becoming my own novice advocate.
