    A stabbing in Milwaukee...shocker

    Snowball fight turns into stabbing

    The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE — A 21-year-old man is in the hospital after he was stabbed following a snowball fight in Milwaukee.

Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz says the snowball fight between a 19-year-old and the 21-year-old started innocently. Then the 21-year-old put the younger man in a headlock.

    The 19-year-old threatened retribution.

When he escaped the head lock, he stabbed the 21-year-old in the stomach.

Schwartz says the 21-year-old was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
She says the 19-year-old is in jail awaiting charges.

OK, this is not national news but it is Wisconsin news and I thought it was cute when I came across it.

Scouts sell box of cookies to Depp
Troop 235 gets to take pictures, shake hands with the 'Public Enemies' star

DARLINGTON, Wis. -- A tri-state area Girl Scout troop got a special treat earlier this month, setting their cookie-selling sights on a Hollywood star.

With famed actor Johnny Depp filming scenes at the Lafayette County courthouse in Darlington for his upcoming movie "Public Enemies," the girls of Girl Scout Troop 235 of the Green Hills Council put their best sales skills to use and sold their most expensive box of cookies to date.

Carly Reilly and her friend Andrea McGowan, both 11, arranged the meeting with the movie star March 18, when they ran into Depp's bodyguard at the courthouse.

Rallying the troops, the girls came back the next day dressed in their full Girl Scout attire to sell some cookies and meet the star.

After nearly a four-hour wait, a black SUV pulled up alongside the girls and Depp rolled down the window.

He purchased one box of Girl Scout cookies, handing the girls a $100 bill and telling them to keep the change on the $3.50 order. Depp then proceeded to shake hands and take pictures with his giddy fans.

Out of all 125-some boxes of cookies Reilly sold this year, that one box of Lemonades is sure to be a hard one to forget.

            Now its Alaska's turn.....and Kansas

            April 15, 2008

KETCHIKAN, Alaska -- A registered sex offender has been charged with two counts of criminal mischief after reportedly having sex with a dog that he tied to a tree. This marks the second reported case of sexual misconduct with an animal in recent months, as reported by Pet Pulse.

Last Wednesday, April 9, a witness allegedly saw Harold Simpson, 26, lead a white dog into the woods using a green rope; the dog was later seen running out of the forest.

The witness said she later saw Simpson do the same with a black Labrador retriever, persuading it to come up to him before tying a green rope around its neck, then leading it into the woods outside the small Alaskan village of Klawock.

In an affidavit, two other witnesses said they went looking in the woods and discovered a man having sex with the dog.

It was tied to a tree by a rope, and apparently had white tape restraining its muzzle.

According to Klawock Police Officer Chris Paulson’s report, he found the green rope and tape with black hair on it from the scene.

Simpson was later arrested and is being held on $10,000 bail. He has a previous history of sexual abuse, and is a registered sex offender after raping a young boy, twice, when he was only 16. The age of the boy he assaulted could not be confirmed.

There is no law in Alaska prohibiting sex with a canine.

“Mr. Simpson, however, poses perhaps the greatest threat to the community of any defendant that we will see in this court, or any other in Southeast, for some time,” said Scott.

It is well established that those who have a propensity for abusing animals, whether sexually, physically or otherwise, are likely to abuse humans as well.

In Paulson’s case, he is guilty of both.

The attorney went on to say that had a small child been present during the time of the incident instead of a dog, “the small child would have been found taped (and) ties in the woods.”

Pet Pulse calls to the Klawock police department and the Ketchikan Animal Protection concerning the sex, status and whereabouts of the dogs were not returned by press time.

In late February of this year, a Wichita man was arrested for a similar crime. Josh Coman, 20, was arrested after breaking into a woman’s garage. When she heard the commotion, the home owner went into the garage to find Coman sexually assaulting her female Rottweiler.

He was later charged with a misdemeanor sodomy charge. Coman also had a previous charge for sexually assaulting a dog. However, Magnum’s Law, which protects animals from abuse, does not include sexual assault.

                    • Kids, mom lived with 90-year-old's corpse for weeks in Wis.

MADISON, Wis. - Two children and their mother lived for about two months with the decaying body of a 90-year-old woman on the toilet of their home's only bathroom, on the advice of a religious "superior" who claimed the corpse would come back to life, authorities said Friday.

The children — a 15-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy — cried hysterically Wednesday after a deputy who came to their Necedah home looking for Magdeline Alvina Middlesworth ordered them out because of the stench from her body.

The children were in foster care Friday. Their mother, Tammy Lewis, and self-described "bishop" Alan Bushey remained in custody on felony counts of being a party to causing mental harm to a child.

"It's a sad case, and we'll continue to investigate it and try to ascertain just what occurred up there," Juneau County Sheriff Brent Oleson said. He said he had no further information on Bushey's religious affiliation.

According to the criminal complaint, Middlesworth's sister called sheriff's officials Wednesday and asked them to go to the home about 80 miles north of Madison to check on the woman, who had not been heard from for some time.

When Deputy Leigh Neville-Neil arrived at the house, she encountered Lewis, also known as Sister Mary Bernadett, the complaint said. Lewis, 35, initially refused to allow the deputy to check on Middlesworth, telling her that Middlesworth was on vacation and saying she had to check with her "superior" first.

But she eventually let the deputy in. The house smelled of incense and burned wood, and had religious materials everywhere and hymns playing on the stereo, according to the complaint.

When the deputy opened the last closed door, she smelled "decaying matter" and noticed something piled on what appeared to be a toilet. Lewis told her it was Middlesworth's body, the complaint said.

Lewis told the deputy that Middlesworth had died about two months earlier, but that God told her Middlesworth would come to life if she prayed hard enough.

She said she couldn't say anything more until she spoke with her "superior" — Bushey, 57, also known as Bishop John Peter Bushey.

When Bushey (pronounced "boo-SHAY") arrived, Lewis told the deputy that Middlesworth had appeared to pass out as Lewis helped her into her underwear.

She said she propped Middlesworth on the toilet and left the room to call Bushey, who told her to leave the woman alone and pray for her, the complaint said. He said he had received signs that God would raise her from the dead with a miracle.

Lewis went on to say she thought Middlesworth was still breathing when she put her on the toilet and called Bushey, instead of an ambulance. She later told a detective she put the woman on the toilet on March 4.

An autopsy has been performed, but results won't be available for some time, Oleson said.

"At this time we don't know what the cause of death was," he said. "Quite frankly, it might have been natural causes."

He described the one-story home in the town of Necedah as in decent repair, although the residents had been using "makeshift" toilet facilities because of the situation in the one bathroom.

The boy at the house told a detective he had considered running away because he was uncomfortable with the situation. He said Bushey told him that demons were trying to make it look as if Middlesworth wouldn't come back to life, and that if she were to be discovered he and the girl would have to go to public school and get jobs because Middlesworth paid the bills.

The boy referred to Middlesworth as "grandmother," the complaint said.

Oleson said Middlesworth was unrelated to Bushey.

"She believed in the same faith as self-proclaimed Bishop Bushey, and that was the connection there," he said.

Oleson said that Middlesworth and Lewis lived at the residence with the children since fall of 2004, and that Bushey lived elsewhere.

Bushey and Lewis are scheduled to make an initial court appearance May 19. Aside from the felony counts, Lewis also was charged with obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor.

The sheriff said cash bond was set Friday at $50,000 each, but Lewis was allowed to post 10 percent for her release.

Computerized state court records had no attorney listed for either suspect on Friday.
