I'm not sure I agree that reporters of the past wouldn't have been interested in debunking a story like this. I think they would have, or at least would have been forced to have independent corroboration whether they wanted to or not. The news services required it. Reporters lost there jobs for having major errors in the factual basis of a story. Now, it seems everyone is more interested in speed than accuracy. Get it out there, and correct it later. There isn't the embarrassment for being wrong that there was in the past.

They did have telephones in those days, so a trip to California wouldn't have been required. The various news services also had very extensive networks of "stringers" who were independent but paid for information provided. They were often used to verify information such as this. A stringer would have relished a story like this.

The story wouldn't have needed debunking because without proper corroboration, it would never have seen the light of day in the first place.

Magazine writers aren't writing the news. SI gets published every week, this wasn't a breaking story for them. I don't expect the same standards as newspapers or TV news because I realized long ago that writers (especially in magazines) aren't experts in these matters and the narrative is what they specialize at.

The story was about more than the girlfriend and would have been published on the cover regardless of her existence. What surprises me is that they buried the lede of their own story. And they buried it precisely because they couldn't confirm it. It should not have made it past that point. They tried to sneak it through and got burned.

And if you aren't an expert, all the more reason to make sure that all of your sources are good. There is no excuse for any entity that refers to itself as a media outlet to do otherwise. The story never should have been considered for publication until they found evidence of her and their relationship.

It would be tough to find a comparable situation but he had a Priest, a Father, Mother and teammates who all claim they knew who she was and 2 of those claim they met her.
