I'd take a solid player that is more durable, over a star that gets hurt easily any day.
I don't think you can postpone positioning of broken bones until after the season. They will begin to, or attempt to heal where they are.

I agree with your concerns about his health, and I was somewhat ambivalent about his contract extension because of it. Broken bones are somewhat fluky things that just happen. The hamstrings are another issue. I suspect they will be the early end of his career at some point, because an article I read recently said the biggest factor for getting a hamstring pull is having a previous hamstring pull, and Matthews has had a bunch. He said this year that he has had them in both legs and in many different locations.

I had hoped he would play 18-20 years like his father and uncle did. I doubt that is in the cards for him. I now hope he plays enough over the next 5+ years to justify his contract extension. I doubt that he will get another in GB.

Here's what happens when you don't get it fixed right away.

fixing a fracture dislocation with pins is standard of care. Matthews grabbing is essential to his tackling technique. For a fast burst guy, it's essential that he have a fully functional hand. Without treatment, he'd lose that mobility in the present (club) and forever (malalignment, fusion) if he 'waited' until the end of the year. Plus, he wouldn't be able to lift the toilet seat:

Years ago, players probably WOULD have taped it up and played with it, but could have ended up with a thumb of little functional use as a result. Things can be fixed now that the "tough" guys of the past played with. Sure doesn't mean those who opt for surgery to get things fixed properly are any less tough.
the article says its those wires, not screws

and for those cringing because of screws being inserted. you don't feel the screws at all. bones have no nerves i have found out. broken bones hurt because all the tissue around the bone is affected

i broke a bone in my thumb back in college, don't know if it was the exact same or not, but it does suck and hurt like hell. you can't use your thumb at all. and for me, because i didn't go in and get it fixed, i had problems with it for a few years

            surgery was the right move

Let me take up Rut's line of thinking: standard of care, functionality, alignment, this is all just pussy thought. Why couldn't Clay just have his thumb amputated (sans anaesthetic, of course: bite the bullet) and play next Sunday like the team needs him to?

These guys have been stars in HS, college, & now the NFL.

I laugh my ass off when internet dimwits like you (I've seen some of your previous posts on here) question their guts to play hurt.

How the fuck do you know if a guy is feeling too much pain or is incapable of taking the field?

Oh yeah, that's right, you'd sling your keyboard at the runner and knock him down that way.

Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Just think how doubly angry Wist would be: a poorly aligned defense with poorly aligned thumbs!
