Belichick seems to mesh with those types of guys though. By all accounts, McDaniels was a real prick to most people involved with the Broncos before and after his reign there. Bill welcomed him back in New England shortly after he lost his job in Denver.

OK, I can accept that at face value. But McDaniels is supposed to be the guy who goosed the NE offense to its record season run.

What is Lombardi's calling card talent? Was he a fabulous scout?
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

            Pro personnel dude.

Bill Walsh at SF taught him how to take the pro scouting guys data, boil it down, and figure out the value players to go after. He then did that for the hoody at Cleveland. His major NFL feat was working as the PP guy (and buffer with the HC's) for Al Davis with Oakland for 9 years.

There was a Cleveland writer who summarized (as he saw it) the Cleveland fuck-up. Haslam was all pissed off that the Brownies had another so-so season with a no name coach. Banner and Lombardi assured him they would get that fixed. They fired the Chud and then failed to get a name guy. Haslam threw a hissy fit and fired Banner and Lombardi.

            Strange, but maybe true.

It's too many cooks. And Haslam doesn't know how to manage an NFL franchise as an owner. He's treating it like running a business, and (I think) doesn't realize what he doesn't know so he can't appropriately delegate authority.

That's a good article. I was going to ask on here if any of our locals on PR knew what happened up there.

The whole thing from Holmgren to now makes very little sense.

Right now, you have a coach who wasn't hired by the GM & the two don't know each other or have any experience working together?

                I doubt it.

Best line I've heard is..." To call the Clevleand Browns a circus is an insult.

                To the circus business."

It is good - the writer tries like hell to put a +ve spin on it, but it still looks like the mess it is.

I love that Banner is taking public speaking lessons from Tiki Barber...he was flabbergasted by his firing!

Former #Hawkeyes QB and assistant David Raih has joined the Green Bay Packers as an offensive coaching assistant. Smart, hard-working guy.

Does he have any experience with special teams?

Maybe he knows what offenses don't like Outside Linebackers to do.

Packers seem to like to spit duties outside/inside. Apparently David Raih was the outside receivers coach for Texas Tech - but for just one game. I wonder if they will let him talk to Cobb or the TEs. Actually he was a graduate assistant working with TEs at Iowa and was the high school outreach guy at TT (Texas Tech, TT - oooo, is there a little similarity there? I think so)

Joking aside, this is the kind of guy I was alluding to - you bring in fresh blood that you teach and also he brings a new perspective.

                          • More on Raih:

"Between his first stint at Iowa and interning with UCLA, Raih was a medical equipment sales representative for Zimmer Inc. and became the youngest winner of the Presidents Club Award in company history in 2006."

Zimmer makes orthopedic implants, devices, screws, plates, etc. That's perfect - the Packers have an in to get discounts for all the hardware they need for their injured players!

                              • Per PFT:

The Browns’ unpredictable head-coaching search nearly finished with what would have been the most unpredictable outcome of any head-coaching search since Jon Gruden was traded from the Raiders to the Buccaneers a dozen years ago.

Per multiple league sources, the Cleveland Browns nearly pulled off a trade with the 49ers for the rights to coach Jim Harbaugh.

A deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to San Francisco was in place between the teams. But Harbaugh ultimately decided not to leave the 49ers.

The 49ers could not immediately be reached for comment. Efforts to contact the 49ers continue.

The Browns declined to comment specifically on whether an effort was made to acquire Jim Harbaugh. The Browns characterized the search as thorough, and the Browns acknowledged that many options were considered. The Browns emphasized that the team is excited about its new coach Mike Pettine.

A deal would have been stunning, for several reasons. Harbaugh has taken the 49ers to the NFC title game in each of his three years with the team. Also, he would have joined the same division as his brother, Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

Which means they would have been squaring off at least twice per year, and competing directly for division titles and/or wild-card positioning.
Wonder what kind of picks the Browns were offering to make a deal like that?
