  • I can't imagine Harbaugh would have even considered that. He would be leaving one of the best teams in football to go to a bad team with a dysfunctional front office that would be minus several draft picks as part of the deal.

    • An unnamed source with the 49ers said the story is untrue, although the 49ers haven't aid anything officially. The Browns said they are very happy with the coach the hired, but they did not deny the story.

There's been stories of friction between Harbaugh and the SF front office for a couple of years, so he might be looking to get out. I can't see him wanting to be in the same division as his brother, playing him twice a year though!

        • Leaking the store is a way to light a fire under someone to solve the friction problem with liquidity OR a new job title and responsibilities.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

          • Can we trade Slocum or Capers to the Browns? We will include picks as part of the deal.

They have a nice box of athletic tape available:

              • Worse feeling: trading for athletic tape or for 10 bats?

                  bats!

Tragic end for John "Bat Man" Odom
                  http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3950464

Ask the most hard-core baseball fan about John C. Odom and most likely you'll get a blank stare. Yet millions of people have heard of the slender right-hander.

He was "Bat Man" or "Bat Guy" or "Bat Boy," the minor league baseball player traded for 10 maple bats.

It became a big joke last May when word of the unusual swap jumped off the sports pages, and the former San Francisco Giants prospect went from pitcher to punch line.

"People are like, 'I'd kill myself' and stuff," Odom said at the time, dismissing any such notion.

Three weeks after the trade, he abruptly left the team.

Six months after the trade, he was dead.

The medical examiner said Odom's death in Georgia on Nov. 5 at age 26 was an accidental overdose from heroin, methamphetamine, the stimulant benzylpiperazine and alcohol.

                  • Maybe Jimmy Haslam is not as dumb as we thought. Joe Banner probably is, though.

Report: Browns’ coordinators were to report to Joe Banner

                    • Further evidence Mike Florio gets confused about how NFL teams are organized:

Mike McCarthy makes it clear he’s in charge of defense

With the exception of Pittsburgh (which violates all rules except public ownership and makes it work) and Dallas (which violates all rules except public ownership and suffers for it), no Defensive Coordinator controls his own staff. At best, he will get to recommend people to help him implement a new scheme, but even that's only one or two guys.

                      • I don't really know what the hell is going on at 1265 Lombardi, except it seems clear MM is going to pay more attention to what's going on with the defense.

I'm still not sure what he means by wanting to be "more multiple," but if it means more complicated, I'm in despair. Too many memories of Al Harris arguing with one of the safeties about who was supposed to cover the guy trotting into the end zone with the football.

More multiple should mean less complicated, or at least less volume. Smaller, smarter playbook so that when shits not working or everyone's hurt there is something familiar to default to.
70% of the Earth is covered by water. The rest is covered by Al Harris.

I don't think it actually means McCarthy is going to pay MORE attention to defense during the season or during a game. Given McCarthy's predilections to planning, executing the plan and then adjusting after the fact, I think it means he wants Dom to settle on a plan, install it and stick with it until it burns itself out. Don't plan for injuries by limiting what you install so you can have replaceable parts.

In that framework, more multiple would be a larger number of personnel groupings and not just base, nickel and dime.

To 3irty1's point, you would HOPE that each of those is more basic in its execution, since larger numbers of players will be coming on and off the field each down.

And I think the idea is to, at some point, put all you talent on the field in a spot to succeed and let them go. It remains to be seen if Capers can create such a defense. He and Belichick, when they parted ways, were described as not seeing eye to eye on everything on a defense. Belichick may have simplified recently by running 4-3 in base, but he still uses a LOT of moving parts.

                            • Can someone check my timeline here?

This article says Baalke was pre-approved by Harbaugh before he left Stanford and that York then hired him as GM. Wasn't Baalke the guy who replaced Friend of Ted and ex-Packer Scot McCloughan?

Harbaugh is now battling Baalke for control and McCloughan is getting all kinds of interest as he works for the Seahawks.

Let’s start this with a few important points to remember as we assess the ripple effects from the Jim Harbaugh/49ers Continuous Tumult Tour: * Harbaugh and Trent Baalke formed a decent bond at the end of Harbaugh’s Stanford tenure to… Continue Reading →

                              • That was a good link. It got me wondering how things are under the surface at 1265 Lombardi.

Anybody hear any good offseason tidbits about Ted and Mike's relationship?
