For the purposes of this discussion, I have no opinion on the specific answers to those specific situations. My point is only that they are the kind of situations where analytics won't help you much. In other words, analytics is another tool in your kit, but if you lean on it too much, you're gonna get smoked. Hell, an entire analytics regime in Cleveland thought they could ride out three years of accumulating picks before they need to win more than a game. That's the extreme example of course, but you get the idea.

That is the process branch of the analytics front and they were mortally wounded when they traded away the draft pick that would Wentz (right?) and it looked like he was Joe Montana his rookie year.

Process people never seem to be able to explain when the get young talent phase ends and winning begins. See Phila 76ers.

Contrast that with the Brewers, who are deep into analytics and still ended the rebuild and went all in for two years when Yelich and Cain, et. al. paid higher than expected dividends.
