    @WiscoGrant

simply amazing that the Packers had an harder time replacing Mason Crosby than they did replacing Aaron Rodgers

PFF and a few others thought Caleb Jones had a really good game against Baltimore. Too little, too late?

Not just preseason games this season. Heath has also played in actual NFL games before, and didn't look bad.

This might be a case where Bretsky's "they drafted him so they won't want to cut him" might apply. I think Dubose was "only" a seventh, but I recall Harv or NewsBruin being really high on him. If only one of them knew how to kick . . .

SHOULD WE MAKE A LIST OF GUYS WHO APPLY TO THIS ? Not sure there are that many, but it would be fun to accumulate a list
TERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Thank you FLOWER

I don't think it really applies to guys in the 6th or 7th. They have to actually be roster-worthy at that point. It's quite possible DuBose is roster-worthy. If he's kept, it's not going to be because he was selected 5 spots before Heath.

You know, it’s troubling to me that this supposedly contending team has a brand-new backup QB who won’t know the playbook for probably a month, no real strong sense of who they want as the backup swing tackle, and uncertainty as to who’s going to be doing the kicking.

That's assuming they don't keep three.

So their biggest concerns are backup QB, backup OT and kicker? A lot of teams would like to have the Packers problems.

We can sign QB Tim Boyle back to the squad.
They probably released several of the CB’s to pick Kevin King back up.

I'd have kept Caleb Jones over Andre Dillard. Everything else as far as roster cuts and initial 53 personnel as of today, I can live with.

Dillard was actually lights out after Gary ate his lunch early. Dillard has immense natural talent and I have to wonder if they (Steno, Gutes, whoever) didn't see something fixable on tape that made them bring him in. I'm not saying he is suddenly top 20 NFL caliber LT, but he looked every bit the part of swing tackle in the games he played. Jones on the other hand had the skillset of being large. It wasn't going to improve much from here I think.

I don't trust Dillard based on his history of being a turnstile so hopefully you're correct about coaches fixing him. Caleb Jones had no history of such turnstile-ism.

I also always wondered - with the whole tackles become guards philosophy in Green Bay - why wasn't Caleb Jones given the opportunity to attempt playing guard? Yes, his main skill was being large but his secondary skill was being quick on his feet which is why he was at tackle. The man was nearly poached off the practice squad in year 1. Then the Packers elevated him to the active roster and kept him there as a backup tackle for like 3 years. You don't invest that kind of time without talents other than being large. If you think enough of the guy to prevent him from being poached and you think enough of him to be a backup tackle for a few years, then I feel like the Packers maybe missed an opportunity to give him at least a whirl at guard.

Other missed opportunities - even if "being large" is seen as his only skill - might include checking him in as a TE on obvious short yardage situations or other opportunities where a large nimble footed man could open holes in the ground game.

During preseason I never heard his name called and I only saw him at LT the entire time. If memory serves, this lack of mention historically indicates playing reasonably well for a tackle.

Jones was always listed as a project that was intriguing because of his size. The Packers obviously felt he was never going to develop into a serviceable player.

We’ll see if he gets another opportunity, but it’s somewhat telling that he hasn’t even landed on a practice squad yet.

                                1) Jones wasn't a turnstile because he never started 16 games at LT against other starters.

                                2) I think he is 6'9" so no way he can play guard. Love wouldn't be able to see past him.
