haven't spent a dime on the NFL since 2019 and I won't ever again, unless things radically change. I still have a slight nagging desire to kind of follow because of years invested, but I mostly only watch with my dad to keep him company.

Is this THE most injury-filled training camp in memory, or do I just panic every year?

Speaking of - well, not panic but disappointment - I thought Jacob Monk would be a very solid backup center this year, lining himself up to take over when Elgton Jenkins becomes unaffordable at season's end. But The Monkster has by all accounts had a disappointing training camp.

On the other hand, Ty'ron Hopper seems vastly improved and may be challenging Simmons for that #4 linebacker spot.

It does seem like an awful lot of injuries.

Monk has been very disappointing. When they lost Travis Glover, I thought they had lost their #9 OL. Turns out, if he were healthy he's be #7. I think the Packers have 6 legitimate starting OL, and then a big dropoff.

I think Hopper already is the #4 LB. The question is whether Simmons or Kristian Welch is the #5.

Overview

Long defensive back with speed, athleticism and ball skills that might have teams posting him in the cornerback column instead of at safety. Simpson has started at both positions but might be caught between the two. He doesn’t support the run well enough to instill confidence as a last line of defense and he can be a little tardy to get his hips flipped in one-on-one transitions as a corner. Simpson does pedal and match receivers in space, balancing his eyes between route progressions and the quarterback as a high safety. He also contests catches with good success. He’s a good football player with explosive traits, but teams will need to have a plan for how to use him.

Strengths

Able to reroute from bump-and-run coverages when pressing.
Transitions from smooth backpedal to sudden gather and burst.
Above-average change-of-direction quickness and closing burst.
Natural ball-hawking instincts show up with his angles to the throw.
Length to meet catch point at the same time as the receiver.
Triggers from safety perch to strike crossing routes with jarring contact.

Weaknesses

Tall but slightly built with limited room for additional mass.
Gets pushed around by blockers as a safety or a cornerback.
Troubling angles in run support will turn into missed tackles and chunk runs.
Slight hiccup when trying to swivel hips in transition and run with go routes.
Ball-hawking aggression creates issues for him on double moves.

The corresponding moves from the signings today were released CB Garnett Hollis Jr. and waived/injured DL Keith Randolph. If they got into either preseason game, I didn't notice.

The way Simmons has played at linebacker (not well), the question might be simply which one’s better on special teams?

I think that's exactly what it is. Both are regarded as good ST players, but last game Welch had 20 ST snaps to Simmons' 7. Something to watch for Saturday.

Rookie DL Barryn Sorrell’s knee injury is a sprained MCL. He said he does not think he will be out more than a few weeks so perhaps he won’t need an IR-designated to return spot.

They should be able to carry him on the 53 until he's ready. They can get by with Gary, Van Ness, Enagbare, and Cox/Mosby. Edgerrin Cooper has also been lining up at Edge some.

Aaron Banks was out today with a recurring back issue. Morgan lined up with starters at LG. Waiver pickup at G/C a real possibility this year.

Hopper has looked pretty good against scrubs. Simmons has looked like shit against all levels of competition. Hopefully Simmons will be off the roster and spending his Sundays on the couch so I never have to see him on a football field again. Unless he wants to go play for the Bears or something.

I was guilty of looking at numbers and not film on Simmons. He is just totally lost in coverage. I saw 2x a guy come into his zone and he simply sat tight in his position until the pass was completed and then ran to tackle. Just no instinct (knowledge??) what so ever regarding his responsibilities within his flat. It can't be not knowing the system as all zone responsibilities for an off ball LB are pretty similar. You just have to watch for the players coming into your zone and pick them up immediately. My hopes for him are dashed. He is a great athlete, just not a great football player....so Gutes will probably keep him around.

WR/CB/Bootlicker, Matty Slater, got a nice career in Boston by being an “ace” and Belichick’s handyman.

6-4, 240, 4.40 40. Simmons has all the tools to be an ace and handyman. Question is, does the German Shepherd value “teams” playas? Gutekunst, a proud German, guy once cut ace Jeff Janis, so, unlikely.

I think the Packers have 6 legitimate starters in the OL group. But they have zero dependable depth behind those guys. I'll be surprised if Gute doesn't make a waiver pickup or trade for a vet at G/C.
