I am glad you think it was pointless, at least that showed you read more then 1 line. However, a lot of things said are pointless to some and not to others."Once the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the Republic.”

Well they didn't ask us, they just did it. However, if you don't see one of those TSA security thingys stating they opened it and it has been opened, I would be concnerned.Originally posted by GuinessYes, they do open your bags, but in my experience always with you right there. I've traveled off the beaten bath (Europe and NA) quite a lot. I've had my luggage hand searched dozens of times and never had someone open my bag without me present.Originally posted by MerlinIt's a great idea if you are traveling within the US because security seldom if ever searches checked bags. If you are traveling in or out of the country, they have a tendency to open your bags more often then not so there is a good chance it will be broken anyway.Originally posted by Guiness[snip]here's what I do when travelling: Use small tie wraps to lock the zippers together on your bag, cutting the tail off. Get a small pair of sidecutters and stick them in a separate pocket of the bag to remove it on the other end. Those things are bugger hard to break and even difficult to remove with a knife. If, when you see your bag, the tie wrap is missing, don't even touch it. Tell security, and make them retrieve it.
They ask you to open it. You tell them there's a pair of cutters in a side pocket, and ask them if it's ok to use them. After they agree, you cut the tie wrap, and let them search. Inside the bag you've got more tie wraps; take one to replace the one you've cut off."Once the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the Republic.”

LOL...okay Big ManOriginally posted by PartialMerlin, I am still awaiting you to name your 891 muslim killers.
Here is your 5 second Google answer (and yes I know it's irritating but he obviously can't Google for it himself):
And remember that most of these are leaders of the groups (meaning they have more then one member so you aren't confused). I am sure if you were worth the time I could easily come up with 891, but sadly, your argument is naive just like you!"Once the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the Republic.”

Right out of the right wing playbook. Ignore the facts. More terrorist attacks in this country committed by americans than foreigners.Originally posted by HarveyWallbangersI love this. It's right out of the left-wing playbook. Caw! Let's not worry about a threat because there's a more convenient "threat" to prop up (and, look at that, it's those darned right-wing extremists). Left wing extremists had their pipe bombers (see Minnesota's own Sarah Jane Olsen). Right wing extremists had their McVeigh and the abortion-doctor killing dude. Scary! Sorry, it's a tired and lame argument.Originally posted by Tyrone BiggunsAs far as terrorist goes...tyrone is much more concerned with right wing extremists and neo nazi groups in this country. Mcveigh wasn't muslin, nor was that loon who killed doctors who performed abortions.
Neo-Nazi groups. Hah! Funny! They are so rampant. Them and the Gangs are the real threats to the American way of life.
Oh, no. I'm quivering cause if we don't fight them over there than they will fight here. LOL
yep, can't wait for the terrorists to land here and start a war. Regardless, the terrorists will always be able to strike. As Israel, Britain, Spain, France, etc.

If you recall, the terrorists aren't really interested in landing. And yes, they will always be able to strike. but the pattern for al Qaeda has been to plan big spectacular terrorist attacks, that require considerable funding and planning. It's at least reasonable to argue that an aggressive stance on the war against radical Islam should strive to disrupt that effort. Take out Afghanistan and when the rats like Zarqawi flee to Iraq, take them out there. And while we're at it, going agressively into Warzistan could be a good idea. Can terrorism be prevented? Perhaps not. But was the policy of stablization, promoted over the past century, the best policy? Do we curl up in a ball and wait, or go out and promote pluralism, democracy, and capitalism? I understand your point, however that isn't what i'm referring to..and you know it. Many people say, if we don't fight them there, we will have to fight them here. That is just absurd. We will never actively engage them here..other than what we are currently doing..breaking up plans, finding plots, discovering cells. So, that would mean we are currently fighting them here..correct?
You and I both know that this sort of poor logic and fear mongering is just used to promote the war. Whether you believe in it or believe it is winnable is not my point. I think you know my feelings. It is just good old fashioned marketing based on fear.
As for promoting pluralism, democracy, and capitalism..is that what we are doing. LOL. That wasn't the reason we went into Afghan or Iraq...and if so, why didn't we accomplish it in Afghan.
As for attacking countries..again, useless. Terrorists are all over. You can't subdue them. Nor do they just flee to another country..they are already there. And, furthermore, I love how conservatives refuse to attack the country most responsible for funding...when are we going into Saudi Arabia?
BTW, if you wanna accomplish those goals, there are much better ways than hinging success on elections. That should have been the last thing we worried about. Plenty of other democratic ideals to be spread first...freedom of press, speech, etc. all of those are way more important than elections.

You know why we're in Saudi Arabia - business. And it's not a partisan thing either. This is part of the stabilization crap I hate. We tolerate the oppressive Saudis for our self-interest (and the rest of the world as well - note that the U.S. only gets 18% of our oil from the mideast, much of their oil goes to Europe and across the globe) - meanwhile a disaffected underclass develops that the Saudi leadership actually encourages. Like Egypt and other countries, they pull the Orwellian strategy of creating an external enemy (the U.S.) to distract them from their own problems. You might argue the U.S. government is doing the same with al Quaeda (your fear-mongering argument). The difference is that the threat is real and has been actualized. Still, terrorism can't topple our country, but it can still cause disrtuptions. it's not an imagined threat - overstated at times, but it exists.Originally posted by Tyrone BiggunsRand,Originally posted by mraynrandTy,Originally posted by Tyrone BiggunsRight out of the right wing playbook. You have a point about spreading democracy. It's better, if possible, to have an internal source pushing for reform, rather than toppling a government, and hoping it will take hold. we're in Iraq for the long term because we have to teach the populace some Western ideals. Is that arrogance? maybe, but what is the alternative? Perhaps inadvertently, Bush caused a similar situation in Iraq that Carter helped bring about in Iran. A democracy is nothing special if the people vote for or support a radicalized leadership. The chicken-egg question is how do you spread democratic ideals in a coutry with a repressive government? Will Islam ever really be compatible with western ideals such as pluralism, womens' rights, etc.?? There are no simple solutions."Never, never ever support a punk like mraynrand. Rather be as I am and feel real sympathy for his sickness." - Woodbuck

Thats crazy. Pervez knows how far he can take it and at what speed. As much as I dislike the way he came into and has held power he is the only "good" option there right now. If we attacked the tribal areas with force we would start a chain of events that might lead to........a Nuclear war with India!
