This is lazy, their QB doesn't play defense.Originally posted by call_me_ishmael View PostThe beat a backup QB - let's temper expectations a bit.Swede: My expertise in this area is extensive. I don't think it's lazy. Had Caleb Williams been playing, it'd been a whole different game. As it would have if Parsons had been playing, and Cooper, and so on.

Money Mase as assistant ST coach. I like it.Originally posted by Patler View Post
I wondered about the wind, and if maybe he overcorrected.
Several past Packers kickers have talked about how confusing the wind action can be inside the stadium, and that it takes time to really understand it. Apparently, the direction can change at different elevations under some wind conditions. I don't understand why they don't bring in Crosby for a couple days to go into the stadium with Smack to give whatever insight he might have. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary -- Vince Lombardi

All McAnus knows is Gutes handed him a million cash money and then released him even though keeping him through camp to put pressure on the rookie would have cost ZERO more.Originally posted by run pMc View Post
I hope Smack figures out the winds in Lambeau. I know Santos also missed one he normally would make, so I give the rookie some rope. (Plus he's played well so far.) He'll need to learn from this though, you can't leave 7 points on the field and win often. McManus knows about that. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary -- Vince Lombardi

I wasn't faulting Gutes for extending ZBB, I was forgiving him for not having an adequate backup as I said you almost had to count on him bouncing back. The guards were unforgivable since we didn't even have decent starting material (Banks has shown me nothing).Originally posted by Fritz View PostBobble, I agree that it was a good offensive game plan against the Bears and what they were doing and the talent they had or did not have.My point is that having that anemic of a run game is not going to work going forward. I would agree to an extent that the offensive line clown show is laregely Guter's fault. He had two guys out on the street he could've signed at any time but waited until the guards they were using were clearly a tire fire. However, it's not clear whether The Flower was begging Guter to bring in someone else, or whether The Flower thought they'd be okay. In addition, it was not Guter's decision to start Donovan Jennings and Jacob Monk over Travis Glover, who has been an upgrade. Not saying he's great, but he's been better, and the coaches didn't seem to know that. I also think it's ridiculous to fault Guter for extending ZBB, if you were to claim that. The guy was young and clearly a very good right tackle, and nobody could know he'd injure and then re-injure himself. On top of that, you yourself said Morgan would likely be a better tackle right now if he hadn't been played out of position.
So yes, Guter shoulders some of the blame for the horror show. For sure. I'm not disagreeing. But I think the coaching staff also deserves blame for trotting out the product they were.
And I'm having a hard time getting past Edgerrin Cooper's injury. Man, the guy was flying around, playing at a very high level. That defense, with Cooper, Williams, Van Mess, The Dentist, Cisse, and Parsons coming back - that would've been something to see. That defense could keep a mediocre offense afloat for a while, though ultimately it's a leauge hell bent on offense. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary -- Vince Lombardi

Yeah, agree. I think Ben Johnson is a smart offensive mind (and a jerk) and he managed to get wins with backup QBs so I was uneasy about this game. If you think about it more objectively, GB should beat a backup QB at home. We've had too many Baker and DeVito moments lately, and Jalon Daniels giving the team a scare likely contributed to that.Originally posted by Fritz View PostI don't think it's lazy. I think if Caleb Williams was playing this would definitely have been a different game. But I still think GB has a better overall team, they just didn't play like it before this game. 31-7 is winning big, and teams usually don't get many big multiscore wins like this in a season.

Banks has been a walking injury. I agree there needed to be better planning around their backups - betting that ZBB and Banks would stay healthy would be long odds, I'd think. Thinking that Jennings (who is a UDFA) is actually better than players you drafted (Glover, Burton, etc.) is wild, as is playing an undersized Monk at G in a power scheme. Oh wait, they tried to go back to outside zone with players who were better at inside zone/power. I put some blame on Gute, but I put a lot of blame on the coaches and definitely some on the players. MLF/Steno/Butkus for playing all these games with the OL lineup and not developing the draft picks. Players for not being able to execute their assignments and having bad fundamentals. If you can't pick up a stunt with your linemate after a year (or more) on the squad then I don't know what to say.Originally posted by bobblehead View Post

I'd put it at something like 30% Gute, 35% coaches, 35% players.

I can agree with this, as I can with Bobble's response to my post. Plenty of blame to go around.Originally posted by run pMc View Post

So what I wonder also is this: the line is playing better with Tomlinson in there, and with Glover in there. Was Butkus pushing for Glover to start, and Stenavich and LeFleur didn't listen, or was Butkus on the Jacob Monk/Donovan Jennings train? And are they better in part because guys like Tomlinson and Zeitler need no coaching at this point, outside of scheme (I'm assuming Zeitler will start over Glover soon).
Side note: Those of you who actually know what you're talking about - is Belton playing okay at RT?"The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."

Belton has played pretty well the last 2 weeks. Hopefully he can string some decent games together. The big test will be Aiden Hutchinson week 7. Belton really struggled weeks 2 and 3, but PFF gave him a 68.2 score week 5, which is above average. I believe with their scoring, 60 is average and 100 is perfect.Originally posted by Fritz View Post
