Per @49ersPR, the team has informed those GM candidates not invited to 2nd interviews that they are out. Moving forward in their search.

Packers exec Elliot Wolf will be among those participating in a final round of interviews for 49ers GM opening
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Its Kyle Shanahan or bust in San Fran.

      Doug Hendrickson @DHendrickson41
Just spoke with my client Tom Cable and he is reaffirming his commitment to the Seahawks. He wishes to thank the 49ers for the consideration

I guess I've been out of the coach/gm search loop. Does this mean San Fran is NOT going to let the new GM pick his own head coach?

I was wondering the same thing. I mean, I suppose it could work - GM picks players, coach coaches players. But it sure would seem to take the luster off the GM part of the job. I know there are only so many GM jobs in the NFL, but wouldn't a hotshot candidate like Wolf turn down such a hobbled position?

Nope, they are doing both simultaneously because Jed York has such a track record of success deciding between his GM and HC about what course to follow.

There was a note a day or two ago that they will involve the HC (presumably Shanahan) in the final GM interviews.

Wow. That alone should scare away most real candidates for the job. The head coach interviews the GM candidates? Yikes.

They did the same thing with Pete Carroll and I thought that was dumb. But Schneider was OK with it.

But I don't think Shanahan Jr. or most of their GM candidates have the high level experience the Seattle guys did. Carroll was head coach for 2 teams. Schneider had worked at a high level with coach involvement for 3 different franchises (GB, Seattle, Washington).

Make the GM responsible to the HC, now that is a recipe for a successful program. Only bad thing about this piece of good news is that there will be one less team in the NFC West capable of beating up on Seattle for the next few years.

I guess young Jed did not fall far from the DeBartolo tree, did he.

It'd be better if he was closer to Eddie. But he is too close to the John York tree.

Or he got a contract extension to stay. Or both.

Yeah, GBPG has that. Wonder from where that came from. I wonder if its a longer deal than Ted's.

Gutenkist was also one of three they name who got second interviews. The third was George Paton. Gutenkist is supposed to still be in the running.

The Packers retained one front-office executive in personnel Thursday but stand a good chance of losing another next week to the 49ers.
