I like an O-line that occasionally protects the QB - you know, here and there, so maybe, a few times a game, we can get a pass off.
Just take the sack is easy to say when you don't need to have your spleen removed. The kid just seems stubborn and talented enough that someone should be able to work with him.

Fitzpatrick started and was running for his life from the first snap.

        Everyone knows how that goes.

        • Exactly. And nothing makes Fitz look better than a crappy line that makes him scramble around like Fran Tarkington on hot coals.

Then he ought to sign on in Detroit. Apparently it was a total train wreck for them against the Patriots last night. It was, of course, second-string versus second-string (except Detroit played Darius Slay for a few plays to punish him for not reporting for OTA's, as he's looking for a new contract). Nonetheless, Detroit's second string got waxed, got hammered, got wrecked. 31 - 3 or something. The second-string offensive line was a sieve. The secondary depth was non-existent.

It's only preseason, I know. And only second and third stringers. But it was disturbing nonetheless, if you were a Detroit fan.

Yup, looks like another great year setting up for Cheat & friends. Playing in the AFC Least is the gift that keeps on giving. The Dolphins & Bills will be dregs of the league, Jets have improved but not hardly enough. So use surgical marker here and now: Pats stroll to division title, secure 1st round bye, (while resting any players they choose at end of regular season) then have to survive one game (typically a home game against lowest remaining seed) to make AFC Championship Game. They are just so brilliant and amazing the way they play in the toilet bowl division each year to make that game (how many AFC CG's in a row is it now?). And then of course it's a one game coin flip (usually played on their home field) to make the Super Bowl.

It's because they are just. that. good.

I approve of this well-supported and totally justified cynicism.

                  • Steelers WR coach Darryl Drake dies at age 62.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers coach Darryl Drake died Sunday morning, the team announced. He was 62.

Steelers president Art Rooney II released the following statement on Drake's passing: "We are at a loss for words following Darryl Drake's passing this morning. Darryl had such an impact on the players he coached and everyone he worked with throughout his entire career. He was a passionate coach and had a tremendous spirit toward life, his family, his faith and the game of football."

"Darryl was a close friend and had a tremendous impact on my coaching career," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement. "He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather, and it is difficult to put into words the grief our entire team is going through right now.

"Darryl loved the game of football and every player he ever coached. We will use our faith to guide us and help his family throughout the difficult time.

"My heart and our prayers are with his wife, Sheila, and Darryl's entire family."

Pittsburgh's practice on Sunday at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania was cancelled.

Think about how much more fun camp would be though. Now we are left arguing about how much to run the football and whether Aaron Rodgers ego is so large he will never fake a hand off again.

Trade: Ravens are sending kicker Kaare Vedvik to Minnesota in exchange for a 2020 5th-round draft pick, per league source. Vikings could wind up using Vedvik as their kicker and punter.

I cannot wait for this to backfire.

                        • There's an old saying that goes, "You aren't being paranoid if everyone really is plotting against you." There should be a similar saying for the NFL preseason: "You aren't overreacting ...

Vikings trade fifth-round pick to the Ravens for kicker Kaare Vedvik: Veteran kicker Dan Bailey has struggled in camp, though the fact that the Vikings are cycling through snappers and holders could be the root issue. The Vikings have a habit of both overpaying for kickers (they traded up to draft Daniel Carlson last year) and overreacting to their setbacks (they cut him after two games). A fifth-round pick is too much to squander because of a kicker panic.

Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro retires; team signs kicker Taylor Bertolet: Catanzaro was having a rough camp, so the Jets kept tabs on Bertolet (who spent last year in camp with them) as a potential low-cost replacement. The Vikings can learn a thing or two about managing their kicker resources from the Jets. Think about that.

Can't wait to see him miss a potential game-winning kick against the Pack in game two. Then the Vikes cut him, and trade another pick for another kicker.
