Packers To Hire Jonathan Gannon As DC

Gannon was defensive backs coach in Indy 2018-2020 when they had some very good defenses with Eberflus as DC. He was DC in Philly in 2022 when they went to Super Bowl. His defenses in Arizona as HC 2023-2025 were not good. Packers beat Cardinals in 2025 27-23 on late TD in which Packers had less than 300 yards offense.I can't run no more

Pretty good article that explains Gannon's defensive tendencies. https://atozsports.com/nfl/green-bay...ensive-scheme/I can't run no more

Well, okay. Quarters coverage, three safeties, not a lot of blitzing but lots of disguising. But how does that help Parsons? You can disguise all you want but you know Parsons is rushing the QB.
And if the base is 3-4, does that mean Van Mess goes back to being an OLB?

I'm wondering if there was pressure to hire a somewhat proven DC over an up and comer. The Packer's window to get to the Superbowl is closing. Maybe they'd rather have someone that has been there than take a chance on hiring someone that might be good, but is an unknown.
JG is not Joe Barry, so we got that going for us, which is nice.

Thanks for sharing that Joe.Originally posted by Joemailman View PostPretty good article that explains Gannon's defensive tendencies. https://atozsports.com/nfl/green-bay...ensive-scheme/
I enjoyed this article too. https://www.channel3000.com/news/top...aa31a44b5.html
It reminds me of Bruce Lee and his Jeet Kune Do philosophies.
For those of you not familiar with Jeet Kune Do philosophies:
Originally posted by The God Damn InterwebsJeet Kune Do (JKD), as conceptualized by Bruce Lee, is fundamentally an "art without art" — a philosophy that rejects rigid forms, styles, and traditions in favor of formlessness, directness, and self-expression. Lee described JKD not as a fixed system but as a dynamic, evolving process: "Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see 'ourselves'... It is not an organized institution that one can be a member of."
Core Principle: "Using no way as way; having no limitation as limitation." This means embracing no style to be free to adapt to any situation, using only what works.
Simplicity & Efficiency: "The art of Jeet Kune Do is simply to simplify." Every movement must be direct, minimal, and purposeful — eliminating waste in thought and action.
Formless Form: "Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water." JKD is fluid, responsive, and constantly evolving, shaped by experience rather than doctrine.
Interception Over Defense: The philosophy centers on intercepting an opponent’s attack — not just physically, but in intent — embodying the idea of "fighting without fighting."
Self-Knowledge as Foundation: "Jeet Kune Do is the art not founded on techniques or doctrines. It is just as you are." True mastery comes from self-discovery, not imitation.
I'll reserve judgement of this hire until after I see the results on field this season."Everyone's born anarchist and atheist until people start lying to them" ~ wise philosopher

I think he uses variable fronts. He runs a Fangio defense, but he also worked for Zimmer in Minnesota and Eberflus in Indy.Originally posted by Fritz View PostWell, okay. Gannon's 2022 Philly defense led the NFL with 69 sacks. Thet had 4 guys with double digit sacks, but also had 13 guys with at least 1 sack.Last edited by Joemailman; 01-25-2026, 02:22 PM.I can't run no more
