OK, Can I just say that the Seattle Seahawks fans are the most annoying fucks on the planet? I didn't get the memo stating that they were the best team in football, they are "entitled" to a Superbowl win, that the stock Seahawks "fan" line regarding the "Fail Mary" call is "Y'all jus hatin you fags it payback and fair cuz we got hosed in Superbowl by bad call so we take what ours cuz revenge is sweet you whiny fudgepackers" and Pete Carroll was a living God amongst us. Can I just vent that out there? Thank you. I feel much better. I must now go run the gauntlet at the grocery store in my Packer gear. It's ugly out there... Wish me luck....

Good question. The wall temperature is more important than the air temperature. If you can find a way to get an accurate measure, my guess is that most paints would have a hard time drying properly if the surface temperature isn't at least greater than 50 degrees. Use the 1-800 # on the paint can if you are really a careful person and want accurate information. Otherwise slap on a test patch and see if it has dried in a couple of hours. If you are not a careful person throw a Jose Cuervo painting party and invite the local Tau Kappa Epsilon chapter to grab a red plastic cup and a brush and if it shticks it shticks. Woo hoo.

MJZiggy

It's supposed to hit 50 degrees next weekend so I may just wait 'til then to do that one wall and get the rest of the room done. Thanks for the advice.

Was the paint coverage itself bad, or is the floor color influencing the shade in some awkward way, or is the white itself projecting an unpleasant whiff of neo-political supremacy?

It seems that it takes four coats of expensive, primer included white paint to cover light blue stripes. It's streaky and while I'm sure the realtor was looking for "clean," this looks only cold and institutional compared to the warm oak floors.

Yes, I empathize about the knee. I have a fully torn ACL right now and the doc also needs to clean up the miniscus with something called a miniscopoly...or some fancy procedure. I play co ed softball with a bunch of 20 hotties.....and I pitch and can still throw about seven out of ten strikes. Docs says I can't damage it worse than it is so I'm playing the summer before surgery and working through the pain. Today this knee feels like a vegetable

Speaking of......a bit nervous here that my daughter started dating someone that seems a lil too excited about guns! Pics on FB look a bit too much what I imagine the Skin compound to look like lol. But you will gain a greater appreciation for older women, until you get to the point that your "tastes" in women span a range of about 50 years or so!

My father died at home yesterday after a 14 month duel with lung cancer. Not a fair fight. My mother and I were with him all week and in his last hours. From the time he entered hospice on Monday he went through about six weeks worth of the dying process in four days. At four o'clock he was asking for a drink and a tissue. At five o'clock he asked us to turn on the lights (they were already on), and at 5:05 I called my children to have them come and say goodbye. I left his side at 5:20 to answer the phone and he slipped away in that moment with my mother holding his hand. Cancer is a cruel disease and it robbed him of all strength. The pain was relentless. We are grateful that the end was peaceful, though a little stunned at how rapidly he slipped from us. I know many of you have been there and felt such loss. It is just cathartic to share.

Going through my dad's stuff with mom we found a baseball autographed by the 1969 Minnesota Twins. Bob Allison's wife was a nurse at UM hospital where my big bro was a frequent patient due to cystic fibrosis. She arranged to have Bob come in and visit him and he brought along a bunch of Twins swag, including a baseball signed by the '69 Twins team which included Billy Martin and Early Wynn as manager and coach, Harmon Killebrew, Jim Perry Jim Kaat, Rod Carew Graig Nettles, Tony Oliva, Cesar Tovar, and the rest.

Looking online that baseball is worth maybe $150 bucks. Sheesh. I'll bet you could get $150 for Aaron Rodgers' toenail clippings. It is funny how sports memorabilia values are so arbitrary and illogical. Aaron can make toenail clippings (and autographed photos) for a good long while, but you won't ever get Billy Martin and Early Wynn and Harmon Killebrew to sign a baseball for you again.

I know what it comes down to, though. Despite the Hall of Famers on that ball, few interested at more than $150, and I wouldn't let it go for five times that.

Oddly enough, I have been spending the weekend in St. Louis. From the rooftop balcony of the hotel I can see the pitchers mound of the Cardinals stadium, the base of the Gateway Arch and the football arena. St. Louis has been delicious. Tomorrow it is Pappy's barbecue and Drew's custard. A local tour guide (He referred to himself as a 'speereinsed tur god,") suggested I must be from Utah or sumtin when I declined his services for twenty dollars. Other than the tur god incident, St. Louis is easy to navigate between the Metrolink trains and buses and pedestrianship.

Can you use trusts to get around issues like this?

You can gift a certain amount each year, I think..w/o implications.

But to this specific instance, what I'm suggesting is in regards to a house that is owned Free and Clear

You have to get that out of your name and into your kids name to prevent a health care organization to take every penny of the equity

so i just read somewhere that the big fat fuck that pushed that rock off the spot its been on for 170 million years out of fears that it might fall on some kid, sued a guy last year whos daughter was in car car that hit him

guys saying he's too disable because of the accident to do anything anymore

if i were the judge, i'd tell this guy the same thing i told some fat fuck at mehnards who took the last rascal forcing me to hobble all over the store 2 weeks after my surgery, only to watch him stand up and carry his wife purchases out to the car without a problem. I believe you have to get it out of their name a certain amount of years prior to them going into a home. I'm thinking it's 5 but I'm not sure. Otherwise everyone would go get the house out of their parent's name a week before they go into a home. Obviously need to plan ahead and it's often a difficult conversation to have with your aging parents. I'm hoping when my time comes I am of sound mind and can take the lead and get all this done without stressing them.

I'm thinking the key is to get the house into your kids name early but have a contract drafted up that no matter what you can live in the house indefinitely. Gotta protect yourself.

I know my family has historically used trusts to pass money around but I think the days of doing that are kind of over. I think a lot of the loopholes to avoid taxes are closed.

Don't a lot of very rich people pay basically full price for life insurance right before they die... as in, take out 10M dollar policy whole life policy for 10M, possibly even taking a loss on the return (buying it for 11M) to avoid taxes? Life insurance returns can't be taxed presently if I remember correctly.

You can make a revocable trust to hold your assets with a successor, creating a durable power of attorney is much more attractive if you've got kids you can trust. Pretty sure that's my purpose as my parents have done a good job keeping me in a psychological prison of unselfishness. My brother and sister must be the kidney donors.

You are right; it is 5 years
I'm prety outspoken on some topics; modest on others.
I told my parents they were stupid on this and everybody should be doing this
One of my parents who speaks before thinking noted they weren't signing the home over to us (brother and I)
Then I told her she was an idiot too then
It was all good..........but for gosh sakes...hopefully others can learn from stupid mistakes like this

I have relatives who are morons
My very elderly grandma just had a stroke and has to be put in a home
They will drain her savings as well as the home the home that is paid in full...or they could

Be smart

When you hit your 80's sing it all over to your kids

I told my parents that their assets were their assets, to be used in what ever way they want. Preserving their assets to pass down to me and my siblings should not be a concern or obligation, unless that is what they want. Both are/were fiercely independent, and wanted to take care of themselves, through their own means, for as long as possible.

My father died some years ago in his 90's, my mother is still alive and in her 90's. She owns their house free and clear, and it remains in her name. She wants to know it is hers, and the value is available to take care of her if ever needed.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

I can really see it both ways. It's a tough topic. You spent your whole life working hard and doing things right and see all of your independence stripped away at an old age - that's rough. On the other hand, it is foolish to flush money down the toilet.

I'm a stingy bastard so I suspect I will do what makes the most sense monetarily. Who knows, I may feel differently when I'm a wiley 90 year old.

Anybody have any thoughts on the life insurance hack? Buy an expensive whole life policy at old age at cost or even a loss to avoid taxes?

I believe a big policy can count towards your federal estate tax. I think the cap for your whole estate is 5 million though. If you've got a successor with power of attorney they might be able to take the policy out on you such that they have the incidents of ownership and avoid estate tax. My great uncle had an estate planner work with him to get his estate down to that number and pile the rest into farmland as you can pass the family farm on tax free. At least that was how it was explained to me back in high school, that's all 2nd or 3rd hand information.

Isn't your family in the insurance business?

When you have dimensia...sp ? .............I'm not sure the quality of life and care is much better regardless. My parents are well off; my grandma is 99 and for the past five years they call her 3 times a day and visit her daily. And now she has a minor stroke, and is put into some facility that takes about 10G per month away. I may be bias or ignorant....but I think it's flushing 10G away per month rather than property planning for this.

I have helped my children become well-established in life, each with jobs as professionals, so they are well capable of taking care of themselves. Consequently, I feel no obligation to provide for them after I die. If I can pass something on to them, fantastic. If not, they will still be just fine without it.

On the other hand, if I should need to be committed, or otherwise placed in a facility for my care, I feel that I should pay for it to the extent that I am able, not you or other taxpayers. If your grandparents had transferred their assets, someone would be paying the 10G per month for your grandma's care. The cost wouldn't disappear just because she had no financial means to pay for it herself.

If I had a child who needed care after I was gone, I am sure I would feel differently.

A great question
The current answer is:

If you have no money it's the tax payers
If you have money it's yours until your assets are drained
once your value is nothing it's the tax payers

+1. Dad is 80, Mom is 76. Both healthy and living in the country on 40 acres. They don't want to leave the place and are holding on, as is their right.

If they leave something to us, great, it'll go to my kids college funds.

Signing their money to my brothers would be an unsound decision. Families can be hateful when that shit comes down.

If you are seriously talking about moving money from parent to child, have a family meeting with an agenda and try to get a third party mediator. When I do succession planning with clients I typically mediate a family meeting. Having a third party around has two main benefits, no family history and an independant person to take the anger out on. This can really help long term family dynamics, just make sure the planner has ties to either the parents or no one, or i could get dicey. As to the life insurance hack mentioned previously, I wish I could help but I don't know american tax law well enough, sorry.

After researching the homosexual tendencies of billions of insects and spiders, scientists have concluded that it's a case of mistaken identity. Up to 85 percent of male insects engage in homosexual acts but scientists now believe that the same sex mating is accidental. Boasting one of the strongest evolutionary drives, the bugs reportedly are in such a hurry to reproduce that they do not take enough time to discern their potential mate's gender.

Doctor Inon Scharf of Tel Aviv University and Doctor Oliver Martin of ETH Zurich University published theirfindings in the journal of Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology after reviewing past studies of 110 species of male insects and spiders, concluding there is almost no evolutionary advantage to insect homosexuality, unlike birds and some mammals.

“It is unclear what role evolution plays in this curious situation. Like heterosexual behavior, it takes time and energy and can be dangerous - and it lacks the potential payoff of procreation,” the authors noted.

The doctors propose in their study that insect homosexual activity occurs because males carry pheromones from previous sexual activities with other females. Those pheromones in turn attract other males.

Dr. Scharf said, "Homosexual behavior may be genomically linked to being more active, a better forager, or a better competitor. So even though misidentifying mates isn't a desirable trait, it's part of a package of traits that leaves the insect better adapted overall."

He also said "Insects and spiders mate quick and dirty.'

That has to be the best study ever. (1) Insects and other vermin are just like us: they cannot tell the difference between the males and females of their species; (2) Evolution cannot explain (human) sexuality. (Disclaimer: I like #2 for reasons that have nothing to do with the politicization of biology in US culture wars.)

Comment woodbuck27:

How can nothing exist when nothing is by definition something?

This successful Packerats Romper Room tread is a proof of that.

It's really become...something...and even in certain regards...something .... else.

How can something...be something else?
