  • From the rumor mill....

In his first news conference as the Dragons' quarterback, Daunte Culpepper said he might not be ready to start the season. Culpepper said he is running straight ahead but not making cuts yet. He is trying to strengthen his knee with ``squats, leg extensions, leg curls, things like that.''

    • Well I talked to Gary Barnett and he has decided to take care of Reggie Bush for the weekend.

      • Nutz,

I've started my draft board. I'll get you what I have later tonight. I can maintain the board if you like it, but you will have final say.

            • Nutz,

DeAngelo Williams or LenDale White or Laurence Maroney as the next RB after Bush?

Williams is small and not really fast, but he has been a workhorse, has great moves, and can catch the ball.

White is a big back who played great on tape, but his workout numbers are bad and their is questions about his work ethic (and I think character). The dude is 244 pounds, but he only bench pressed 225 15 times. That's 10 fewer reps than Reggie Bush.

A lot of folks on here don't like Maroney much, but I think he's for real. I think he's better than Marion Barber--who had a good rookie year with Dallas. He has the frame to get to 225 pounds, he's fast, has great cutback ability, and he can catch the ball.

But at least things feel normal. Now where are the other two?

Williams doesn't have 4.3 speed, but he did run a legit 4.43 with the wind and a 4.48 against the wind on his pro day. He has plenty of speed to take it the distance. He is a good character guy. My only concern about DeAngelo is that he has taken a beating over the last 4 years in college. The guy was a work horse for the Tigers and I think it might cut his pro career short.

LenDale White is a football player. Even though he knows how to play the game his motivation to stay in shape throughout the year is a question mark that is going to stay with him his whole career. He goes hard on game day, but has little will power when not being monitored. Right now unless he would do a private workout for some team, and that team has the inside track on him, I think he is the fourth back, he might not be the fourth back taken, but he is falling off a lot of teams 1st round draft boards.

Lawrence Maroney is a darn good runner both between the tackles and he has the speed to kick it outside and make a break to the sideline. If I was a team like the Broncos I would be targeting with both the 15th and the 22nd. He has really good vision and ability to hit the hole. A couple of knocks on him, is one, he hasn't been the featured back, he has always split time with someone else, and the problem with that is the other backs that he splits time with usually put up similar numbers to Maroney and this brings up the question whether it is the player or it is the system that is creating the player. Some have questioned Maroney's toughness as a football player, and I tend to disagree with those thoughts. He has played through nagging injurings, especially when some would take a couple of weeks off for a sprained ankle or a deep thigh bruise.

I think Williams will go ahead of Maroney but with running backs it is really hard to tell, because teams take running backs based on personal preference, and not so much pure numbers. If it was up to Denver to pick either Williams or Maroney they would probably pick Maroney, while the Jets would take Williams. The dark horse in this debate is White, because he didn't post any numbers at the combine or his teams pro day.

With all that being said, here is how I rank the running backs that will go between round one and round three.

                        1. Reggie Bush
                        2. DeAngelo Williams
                        3. Lawrence Maroney
                        4. LenDale White
                        5. Brian Calhoun
                        6. Joseph Addai
                        7. Maurice Drew

                          • Should I create a seperate thread to discuss the draft board, so it doesn't get lost in this thread--which happened with FA?
